What's HWA, without hardcore naked PCBs. ;):_)

Here's brand new iMac being strip completely down to its PCBs. Enjoy guys! ;)
http://www.kodawarisan.com/imac_2007_mid/imac_2007_mid_01.html

Here you can compare the difference inside older screeny type iMacs.
http://www.kodawarisan.com/imac_intel/imac_intel003.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Site above dissemble most of Mac's laptops and screeny type iMacs. Here are more internal pictures of Mac.

Mac Mini - you can see how much work to just change a HDD. http://www.sterpin.net/uk/ddMacMiniuk.htm

eMac (with CRT) dissembled. http://218.223.20.17/em01.html

Semi ball shape iMac. http://www.macworld.com/2003/08/features/15fpimacupgrade/index.php?pf=1

G4 Cube - from way back, also know as the Kleenex tissue box. One of the worst engineering nightmare for Apple, it suffered from heating issues and a power connector that disconnects frequently. http://arstechnica.com/reviews/4q00/g4cube_cd/g4-cube-4.html

There are also Power Mac G4/G5 tower and Mac Pro tower. But they are not as interesting as those above.

In conclusion, no doubt Apple did quite a bit of engineering in their Mac's. However, the concept of IBM Compatible PC, where a computer is designed in an easily upgradable layout, controlled by an OS versatile enough to handle different types of hardware components by simply loading a driver, is still the most reasonable approach. And the more you see inside a Mac, the more you realize it's just another PC. ;)

As suspected, it has far more in common with a laptop than anything else. All it's missing is a touch pad and keyboard. XD

Cool. I have never seen the inside of a Mac before.

Probably because there is no point in opening it in the first place.

You can see how much more "Windows PC-ish" they have gotten from the switch to IBM PowerPC to Intel Core. Which I guess is a good thing because now they are more upgradeable as it uses just standard laptop components. The best thing Apple ever did to make the Mac more mainstream was switch to Intel and let users install Windows.

And as i have said before in the other iMac thread: The iMac is a non-mobile laptop.

imac's are heavier, have a metal stand, no battery, keyboard/mouse arent intergrated into it, and mac's suck. i hope that explains it.

On top of that you can see that they use all standard laptop parts: CPU, RAM, HDD, optical drive, etc. are all laptop parts. And the non-mobile part is self explanatory although FingerMeElmo explained it too.

What's wrong with using notebook parts? Are notebook parts suddenly inferior to that of desktop components because Apple uses them? It makes sense considering that they want to fit all this into a chassis no bigger than that of a notebook.

I think I'd rather take the virtualization route rather than using an iMac. Does Mac even support that? It's really a key phrase in IT now. Why buy 100 mainstream computers rather than one powerful server with 100 terminals?

Regardless, notebook parts are always inferior to desktop parts in peak performance and performance vs. price ratios. It doesn't matter who put it together.

the only good laptop parts do is concerve power but then again, other very large business's, what other consumer buys a desktop and worries about power? right?

The only time people care about power consumption is when there is a battery involved (be it notebook or UPS).

Agreed. That is why if I were to buy a Mac desktop (which I wouldn't) I would buy the Mac Pro which features server components. Apple doesn't really even offer a true desktop system, as the Mac Mini and iMac use laptop parts and the Mac Pro uses server parts. They need something inbetween that uses desktop Core 2 Duos and standard desktop stuff. Call it just the Apple Mactop or Mac Desktop or whatever. The point is they need a $1000 to $2000 Desktop computer in their lineup.

What about large companies with 100's of computers running almost 24/7...Think about that? ;)

They only care about what fits the initial budget. Heating and cooling always costs substantially more than what it costs to power some computers. The initial cost of the computer is reflected upon how much power it will consume; hence, the more powerful of a computer you need the more power it will consume. There's nothing they can do about that so, they tend not to care either.

Indeed. The Mac Pro is officially a workstation platform, not a desktop.

Judging from the pictures in the site, the HDD is most likely a full 3.5" HDD, if you compare its size to the optical drive and looking at its cable connection.

The hard drive looks almost square to me (proprietary). I wouldn't be surprised if they contract the same people to make those hard drives as they contract to make iPod drives.
