We've had 3D imaging hardware for over 25 years.
It's been the software and application that have lagged, as well as the cost to performance.

I've been giving a great deal of thought to how a "avatar" in a 3D WEB could provide several levels of security and efficiency if the "avatar" is transferent between multiple if not all sites.

The idea of a 3D WEB, though not originating with Gibson's Neuromancer, was highly poplularised by it.

Given several factors in the present WEB 2.0, such as Myspace, youtube, google, yahoo and other "home" networks, as well as virtual reality spaces such as SIMS, and SecondLife, is it that far of a stretch for us to be using 3D internet space to navigate the web on a regular basis?

I can see portals opening into these 3D worlds from the 2D web in the very near future, if it hasn't already happened.

In a very limitted FPS type browser, I can see where a roadmap based upon a Favorites, or directory tree could be utilized for most browsing with jump off points for those "dead-end" sites that do not support it.

This brings be back to the avatar. Wouldn't it be of interest to generate or to at least develop a standard for generation of multi-site avitars that would carry your preferences, as well as appearance across the board? Granted there will be times that you may want to mask yourself, but these would be additional features for those that could purchace them or were savvy enough to do it themselves....not unlike what is present now in a web surfing experience.

I'm thinking about this from both the software and business development as well as stock purchace viewpoints, as IBM is vested in some of the same development technologies.

Something to think about?
