Hi guys....It seems to me, that now that newer games are coming out, which require more CPU power, its probably time I tried overclocking on my year old Opteron 165...:D

In fact, the reason why I bought an Opteron 165, was because it is said to be a good overclocker...and I think its time I put that to the test..

So basically I'm looking for a guide meant for overclocking an Opteron 165..and which is fairly detailed, since I have never done any overclocking before....:P

But dont get me wrong..I'm pretty good with PCs, and I can understand their technical bits :P...I chose all PC parts for my rig myself, through online forums/materials/guides, etc...

Do you have any guides in mind which might help me out ?

Also, I have another question regarding the Opteron 165....My CPU has an idle temperature in Vista, of about 41*C ~ 44*C....is that getting too hot ? I dont think so, but I just wanted to confirm...

Thanx in advance...

depens what you consider too hot. mines idles below room temp so usually around 20 but as low as 10 in winter.

theres lots of guides around

basicly you need to get two iterations of prime95 installed for stress testing and a copy of memtest86+. to mee these are the most important parts that are left out on alot of guides

set prime95 to priority 9 or 10 (password to unlock is 9876)

disable cool'n'quiet

try not to let htt x fsb to get over 1000 (ie5x200)

multi x fsb = cpu speed (ie 200x11= 2.2GHz)

test your cpu first with the ram underclocked find the limit with the amount of vcore you want

maybe bump the chipset voltage .1 or .2 volts have the ram at max warrntyed voltage

then clock back your cpu and test the ram

once you know max oc on both you can find the middle ground thats the best oc, for the voltage and temps you are willing to risk

take small steps at a time ie for cpu i woild go 210 first at max multi then bump it 5 at a time till you get errors in prime then keep decreaseing it till you are prime stable for 24+ hours

with the ram i would take 1 at a time past 205

you can also test your max htt x fsb if you want underclock cpu and ram and kepp bumping at x5, but hey its not really worth it

you might also want to check the maximum fsb your mobo can do under clock cpu and ram and keep rasing the fsb it will probly bottom out between 285 and 315. but i doubt you will be into that.

hey your rig is almost like mine

i can give you my timming for my ram if you like it use to do 275, now it dosent :( .

i use the big toe modded bios on the dfi mobo

try these out

Ram in the orange slots....704-2BT bios (still the best IMO)

In Genie Bios

All I did on my DFI board was put the HTT on 3x, up the Vcore to 1.45, up the ram volt +.02, put RAM on 1T, and jacked up the FSB. I was able to get 2.7GHz stable with no voltage increase. To get it to 2.75, I had to bump it up to 1.45 i think it was. I had DDR 400 ram. Since you have DDR500, you should hit 3GHz no problem.

If you need to, check my thread entitled "Operation Opteron Is Underway" I think I have detailed OC specs in there.

OK, I thought I should shed some light on this somewhat CPU temperature issue that I'm also having...

When I had first got this rig setup, I remember that the CPU temperature was stable at 32~33*C in the BIOS...now, about 10 months later, its around 37~39*C in the BIOS...

The reason ? I'm not sure, but I think its probably because of the dust that builds up inside the casing over time, cuz I havent opened up my rig for a long time now :D

Although I still have to clean up the rig from the inside, I thought I should ask you lot if you think this dust thing could have caused this slight increase in the CPU temperature...

My ambient temperature is about in early 30's in the mornings, and in 20's at night, but my ambient temperature doesnt really have any significant impact on my rig's temperatures, from what I have noticed...

And one more thing, I use MBM 5 to monitor the temps in windows...The idle CPU temperature is about 41~44*C in Vista, and about 39~42*C in XP.......this temperature jumps to about 46~49*C when I'm doing something relatively heavy..

OK people, check this out :

To verify the above temperatures I mentioned, I decided to verify the temps in WinXP. I have a dual boot system, with Vista as my primary OS, and XP as a back, which hardly has anything installed in it apart from drivers...

So anyway, the conclusion is, that temperatures in XP are a lot lower than they are in vista ...check this:

Idle temp:

Vista = 41~44*C
XP =32~34*C

Relatively heavy computation (making Divx's):

Vista = 46~49*C
XP = havent tried yet

OCCT (Dual Core version)CPU Stress Testing (almost constant 100% CPU Usage for 30 minutes):

Vista=Havent tried yet
XP = 41~43*C

So temperatures seem to be a lot lower in XP for some reason...maybe cuz XP is not hogging the CPU all the time in background as Vista does :P...

>> Re: Guide needed to overclock an AMD Opteron 165 (939 pin)
I decided to check out the temps in the BIOS as well, to figure out this confusion...the PWMIC, and chipset temps are more or less the same as they are in XP, but the core temp fluctuates between 37-38*C in the BIOS...This is 34~35*C in XP, and about 41~44*C in Vista...

Maybe, by some strange chance, XP it putting less pressure on the CPU than the BIOS does :D....

Anyways, I have a question regarding OCing and temps...

Assume that my ambient temperature is in early 30s in the day, and 20s in the evening/nights, and that the idle core temps are as I have mentioned above....Then what is the MAX idle core temp I can allow, after any overclocks ?

I am asking because I have seen people having Opty 165's which have been OC'ed so much that its idle temperature is about 59*C.....is this temperature normal for a CPU?

I am asking this because I dont know much about computer temperature ranges, and I dont specifically know the range of 'safe' temperatures....I just know that whenever my CPU reaches 47~49*C (when under very heavy load), I start praying that my CPU doesnt burn down or anything....:D

59c would be way too high for my liking in an idle situation - you could be pushing 70c on load.

To me, that would indicate the use off a terrible cooler.

BTW, what software are you using to measure temps in XP & Vista?

Also, as for Vista hogging the CPU idle cycles - i'm at between 0-5% right now, and thats with media player running, so I dont think Vista really hogs it now, do you?? lol

No actually the guy claimed that he reaches 61*C on full load....just 2 degrees more from the idle condition temperature....pretty much impossible I think...

OK, 2 more questions:

1) From what I understand so far, an increase in CPU temperature only happens if you increase its voltage. That is, its average temperatures do NOT change if you just mess with the multipliers, etc...and ONLY increases if you increase its voltage...Is this true ?

2) The only main factor which limits how far you can overclock your CPU is the temperature. If you control the CPU temperature, you can overclock to higher levels...Is this true ?

>> Re: Guide needed to overclock an AMD Opteron 165 (939 pin)
1) not true. an increase in operating frequency will also have a detrimental affect on temperature, but obviously, overclocking, while keeping the CPU stable with as little extra voltage as possible is what you want. This will give you the best return in frequency V temperature.

2)Temperature is not the only factor. The CPU may simply not be able to work at a higher frequency. The chipset may not be able to reach the potentially high FSB's necessary. The voltage regulation on the board may not be good enough to sustain a stable overclock. Your PSU may not be able to supply the power needed.

There's plenty more could be added to both answers, but they're the main ones to be concerned with.

OK, thanx for being such a help guys....

Some more Qs:

1) I have read a decent amount of overclocking guides by now, and I have grasped onto many concepts very well :) ....The only thing I am still looking for are some overclocking examples....you know, some sample values, and how we managed to overclock them... If I could get about 15-20 overclocking test case problems, I think my concepts wud become even more clearer, and complement my theoretical knowhow... So far, all the tutorials I have seen only have one or two such problems at max...So do you know where I can probably get some more of them ?

2) My concepts regarding the general CPU and FSB overclocking are pretty much OK now...I know about the RAM related stuff too, like the RAM divider concept and everything, but I still need to do some more reading in this area ..... any guides ?

3) Related to the above RAM topic....As you can see in my sig, I have a DDR500 RAM...So I should be able to go to 250 on the FSB with a 1:1 ratio right ? After that, I either need to start using the dividers, or change the timings of the RAM...right ?

2) Also, I think, provided I can get the above mentioned objectives done, I am pretty much ready for my first practical :) ..... Assuming I have done my reading and everything, what is the first thing you think I should do ? What should be my first hit at the hardware ? My first step to achieving an initial overclock ?

the dfi sli-dr is the tweakers dream even alittle too much for some

look at my above posts about my system i have ocz ddr500 2GB kit aswell

it will give you the advanced timming first

as i said earlier

find the limit of each on its own first

ram : mem ratio1:1, high fsb, low multi
cpu : mem ratio 1:2 or >, high fsb and multi
etc

the dfi has a crappy hsf on the chipset.

check my above posts i have my exact oc for my opty 175 and ddr500 ocz on a dfi sli-dr

but the extended ram timmings are what you want use them and then bump the ram up a few MHz at a time(above ddr500 (250)) and run memtest loop test 5

get the bigtoe modded bios

Hey I just thought I'd add here a little about my system since I'm running a dual core AMD Opteron x64 165. She is hosted in an Asus A8N-SLI mobo with 4Gb DDR500 OCZ Dual channel RAM. I've got my multi set to 285 and my fsb is at 9. Vcore is set to 1.445v. My effective CPU clock per Everest Ultimate v5.0 is returning 2628 MHz with an idle temp around 108F.
