What are you powering it with?

I've got two 10k rpm raptors and my Ultra X Pro 750w "sli approved" psu can't power them and an 8800gtx. It can't even power them and an 8800gt. Waste of money.

Anyway, what are you guys using? I assume my only option is just to go 850w or be safe and go 1kw?

Probably becasue the PSU is a POS, not that 750W wouldnt be enough.

600W should even be plenty for you, just ensure you get a good PSU, from a reputable manufacturer - and dont skimp.

Over a 1yr ago when I was putting my wife's system together.... I got a ULTRA infinity 500W psu..... It was my first time using a ULTRA branded product and I was a little warrie about it... Unfortunately for ULTRA brand... that will be the last. When I brought home the psu and after spending hours stuffing this psu and its cables neatly in to a tight organized manner (all due because it was in a SFF case) ... I find out that one of the 4 pin molex cable was dead... yep... a whole segment cable with 3 x 4pin molex was dead... Needless to say that I took it back and got a refund... I ended up getting a 500W Blue Storm FSP (90.00) psu.

Do you think I should get this thing RMA'd??? It's expensive and 750w plus rated for sli. Ive tried every configuration i can think of (sata power, legacy power) on various rails and it always bsods. When Im on my 7200rpm seagate barracuda, no problems. I know the WDs are fine because i just reinstalled xp on them on my old machine.

I have a similar system to yours and I am using the Seasonic S12 650W. What bios version are you using? I think I had a similar problem. I had 3 drivers up and running, 2 seagate 120gb and 1 150g raptor. I was getting bsods like crazy. First thing I did was take apart the whole computer, battery out and left it over night. Then I re-installed vista with everything unpluged except for video and the primary drive. Then I pluged in everything once vista was done. I've had no problems since, This was last thrusday. I too thought it might have been my powersupply. At the time I had my e6700 installed. I am using bios 1103 but going to upgrade to 1205 now because I cannot run my memorys rated timmings with this processor (e6850) so I hoping that the bios update helps. Good luck!

watts aren't what matter. Its the Amps on the 12+ rail that matter. I use a 8800 GTS superclocked runing higher than 8800 GTX speeds with custom bios and 4 160 HDD hard drives. Also count them 8 Twin turbines @ 93 CFM a pop and a 240 mm top fan @ 120 CFM and a tweeked air cooled Stock 8800 GTS cooler rated @ 45 CFM total. All on a 650 watt enermax with 32 amp on 12+ rail. 8800 GTX has a recommended usage of 23 amp on 12+ rail start adding anything else to 12+ rail like CPU and on board lan and it goes up fast. The HDD,s run on the 5+ rails or 12+ rails with common connectors. so whats your 12+ rails rated @? Product info says its supose to have 50 amps on 12+ rail. Yours is clearly a POS. Send it back.

I'm on BIOS 1205; up-to-date as far as I know.

And the thing is, i had only my drives and vid card plugged in. STILL a no go. I seriously think there is something wrong with this psu.

Remember the GOLDEN rule, you PC is only as good as your weakest component.....

NEVER skimp on the PSu try to get a Tier 1 rated PSu.

Adam - your PC must sound like a hurricane. Is your cooling even that good? I would imagine with that many fans, the air flow is obtrusive rather than productive.

Secondly - to the OP - can you confirm that its not your motherboard causing the issue? Have you tried your PSU in your other PC (with the same extra components plugged in)?

I would try that before saying 100% its the PSU

Unfortunately I can't confirm it is not the motherboard. All i know is when I have both of the drives plugged in, my system BSODs before windows. I've tried powering them with legacy power and SATA power. Separate rails. Nothing but the drives and vid card plugged in, no overclock, all bios settings default (minus enabling RAID). When I have the drives hooked up to my old PC or use the new PC with a 7200rpm drive, everything works fine.

I guess something could be going on with the onboard RAID controller? Personally though Ive never had a problem with one component of the mobo like this. It either worked, or it didn't. My current setup with the 7200rpm drive works flawlessly.

It's kind of annoying because the performance drop from two 10k rpm sata raptors to a 7200rpm PATA drive seems to be huge..

Just wait until Gore has them slap a global 50% (based on wattage) CarbonTax on every PSU! e.g. a 2000W PSU will be charged an extra US$1000 CarbonTax.

However, you'll be able to save 25% on that $1000 CarbonTax, by purchasing a US$750 CarbonOffset from his CarbonOffset company...you know...the same one he uses?
