Why me? Is anyone else getting black screen / freezing / stuttering sounds...?

Started off fine - thought it was too good to be true!

Here's my rig:
PSU: 500W Seasonic S12
Mobo: Asus P5K
CPU: Core2Duo E6600 (OC to 3GHz)
2 GB DDR2 PC2-5300 (667 Mhz) Ram
Video Card: MSI X1950 Pro (latest driver from ATI website version 8.421.0.0)
Windows Vista Home Premium

I don't think the GPU is overheating. It's not OC'd....and I'm running game on default settings (medium graphics, sound etc. No AA).

I've been playing with game settings to see if it runs better in "low" graphics mode but it was even worse...crapped out almost instantly. I then undid my CPU OC, back to default 2.4 Ghz ...still freezing up after a couple of minutes game play. I've just about had it now!!!!
(Never had this much trouble with my trusty old Athlon 3500 CPU with XP...next step to try installing game on my old machine. I bet I don't have all this $h1t to deal with........).

And its only CRYSIS that is crashing, I would get the latest GPU drivers and the ones before. I would also get the latest sound drivers. That can play a big part in game probs.

OK, I just updated to latest ATI driver 8.432.0.0 (release date Nov 1st 07) and even flashed the BIOS to latest version 0704 (release date Oct 30th 07)...still getting the same problems...freezing up after about 1 - 2 minutes of gaming...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr >:o

Love to know if anyone else is able to play this with similar rig spec.

Hey, I just restored the system back to a previous setting, with older display driver 8.401.0.0 (27/07/2007) and managed to play Crysis for 30 min straight with no freezing!!!

Sounds like you did indeed have a driver issue alright.

The 7.11 Crysis hotfix drivers from AMD are the ones you should use

Lancool PC K62
Phenom II x3 @ 3.5Ghz
4GB DDR2-800
ASUS GTX570 DirectCU II

Well it has to be your machine, there's plenty of others with similar set-ups to your own running it fine

Lancool PC K62
Phenom II x3 @ 3.5Ghz
4GB DDR2-800

To Steve S: It was probably sound drivers or some other driver got corrupted.

To AL-CID: Did you try updating sound drivers? If you have more than one sound device, have you tried the alternative?

Can sound drivers really have that much effect...? I can understand the graphics drivers messing things up.
According to Device Manager I just have the Microsoft High Def Audio Device drivers - 6.0.6000.16386 (21/06/2006). I'm just using onboard sound (Realtek ALC883 ) - no fancy sound cards or anything.

Of course. I mean look at BF2142 when you put it on high quality and you have an X-fi it takes a huge crap giving static noises that want to make your ears bleed every time Artillery strike (Which is quite often in this game.) and then it finished off with a nice BSOD.

I'm still having trouble with this damn game...brilliant when it works but frustrating as hell when it keeps freezing up / black screening. Looking around it seems I'm not the only one. Just hope there are some patches / fixes on the way. I tried the latest ATI Crysis / Vista Hotfix and it made it WORSE...instantly crashed before I'd even had the chance to pull the trigger!!! Grrrrrrr...

Went onto the EA Games website and tried the suggestion of reducing screen resolution to 1024 x 768 and unchecked Full Screen mode...this allowed me to play for about 2 mins before the old problems returned.

Looking in the Windows Problems history, it just keeps showing "Video Hardware Error" and "Not Reported"...very useful.....

Have you tried reinstalling the game? I bought COD 4 yesterday and for some reason it kept crashing on me before the 1st lvl could be loaded. So I uninstall and check the disc for anything dirty and it turns out it had a huge greasy fingerprint in it (could have been me  ), so I clean it and reinstall and it works fine now.
