Fellow Forum Members,
Does anyone out there know when the 1 TB internal SATA hard drives will take the next leap in capacity? In 2008, is there a good chance 1 TB drives will leap to a capacity of 1.5 Terabytes? 2 Terabytes? Or is it too soon for such a leap in capicity to happen?

The reason I will like to know this is because two year ago I bought six 500 GB internal hard drives and I have run out of space already. Now I'm seeking to upgrade to six 1 TB internal hard drives and I want to avoid making such an expensive purchase if 1.5 TB hard drives are around the corner.

I have to sell all six of my 500 GB hard drives at a loss, and this is why I want to time my hard drive purchase better this time.

Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think it will be a while since 1TB HDDs are still fairly uncommon in systems.

If you don't mind me asking, why do you need 6 1TB drives lol what do you do that you fill up 6 500GBers and need to make the leap to TBs?

haha

I say go for it.

I wouldn't recommend changing them all out at once. Give the 1TB drives proof in the market at least 6 more months before you go all out. It would also help give an indication of any significant upcoming pricing or capacity changes in the interim. You might try one or two 1TB drives and see if they will be suitable for your environment and application.

(I'm guessing at least part of your capacity is required for primary backup or redundancy)

I think its pretty neat that in the age of data compression and hence quality loss our storage technology is outpacing any uncompressed format.... ie we would probably find mp3 redundant in a while.

I know this is a very late reply to your original question.

1.5TB drives will start coming out of the production lines in the middle of this year. 2TB drives production will start around 9 month after the 1.5TB drives.

As far as I know, we can see the arrival of 3TB internal SATA drives within 24 months.
