That would be cool ... then Intel would really have to sweat to keep itself on top... One thing for sure though.... if something like this were to happen... Samsung better clean house in the middle managment and all the way up to the CEO level and take charge...

Samsung "Phenom"
Samsung "Bulldozer"
Samsung "Bobcat"

That has a nice ring to it... dont you think???? :P

I dont like the name of Samsung Phenom. AMD Phenom sounds better. What I would like to see them do is buyout or merge into AMD but keep the name.

Samsung means "3 Stars", as similar to Mitsubishi, "3 Diamonds" . So 3-Stars Phenom sounds pretty cool, isn't it? ;)

But here's the thing, not all mergers / take overs are good things (think AMD and ATI). Hopefully Samsung, nVidia, or whoever decided to buy AMD, have the confidence to straighten the mess up, or else they will be dragged into deep water as well. I don't want to see Samsung in deep shnit, LOL ;)

Q. Could Samsung buy AMD?
A. Yes. However the question to be asked is not "could," it is "would." I find the proposition unlikely because manufacturing processors has a very high investment cost with no assurance it will succeed making it a very dangerous endeavour. AMD has a track record of mostly failures and only one major success. I'm sure they "would" consider it but I doubt it "would" go much farther than that. If anyone were to buyout AMD, it "would" probably be one of those groups that buy corporations, break them up, then sell the parts for a tidy gain.

I think i would like Amd/Samsung... they have the cash and the power to exploit a corporate like AMD to the max and get all the juice out of it

I think Samsung buying AMD would be much better for the industry then if Nvidia, Microsoft, or any of the other company's mentioned in the article buy AMD. With Samsung's money AMD could be back on the right track and we can have some serious CPU competition between AMD and Intel. If Nvidia bought AMD then the graphics card industry is gonna lack any sort of competition unless Intel jumps on board. Microsoft has no reason to buy AMD that I see, plus it would alienate Intel. So overall Samsung seems by far the best buyer for AMD of all the companies mentioned in the article. But as others have mentioned, would Samsung do it. Samsung is doing very well from TV sales (they make some very nice LCDs, I know I have a 46" Samsung ;) ) and as the article mentioned they are #2 in microchips behind Intel.

And if investors bought AMD then you can forget about any good chips coming from them...

I would love to see Smasung buying AMD since In my opinion they need all the help they can get. I agree that Samsung Phenom is a silly name, just like Activision Blizzard. :|

I wonder if they would have been in a much better position today if they had not purchased ATI.

If Samsung ever purchased AMD, Intel is in big trouble. They really wouldn't want Samsung as a competitor IMO.

Samsung won't be buying out AMD any time soon. Even if they did, there is no way they would turn a profit for at least another year. AMD is pretty much junk right now.

Didn't I hear that if AMD purchased ATI, then nVIDIA would be in big trouble? Who was that ...

Samsung would have the resources already there to buy AMD, for an even lower price than AMD bought ATI, and would not require a loan of any sort.

Consequently, should such a speculative venture to wbecome reality. Bye bye AMD as a brand and Company. I dont believe the corporate name holds enough value anymore for a company like SAmsung to hold onto it.

In fact, I think they'd revert to the full ATI name for GPU side of things, but AMD as a corporate entity would cease to exist. IMO (what I also believe to be the most logical)

Maybe it should be bought out by Hef or Flynt, and turn Ruby into a sexbot. Bundle it with Mass Effect, GTA, and Sims2.

They could call her "Ruby 3000".

That'll get the sales performance up again and lead to a dominant position over nVidia.
