I'm having a weird problem, i have two computers, One is a desktop and the other is a Portable.

Desktop is running Vista 32 bit Business Edition, and the Portable is running Windows Vista Home Premium

For some reason i can use remote desktop from my portable to my desktop... But i cant remote desktop into my portable from my desktop?

I can VNC back and forth just fine... i can ping my portable .. but no dice when it comes down to Remote Desktop

When i do it by ip or name, i can get the login window up, i put the user name and password ( theres only one user ) but it doesn't do anything for a while then comes up and says it couldn't connect ?

This has weirded me out...

Regular stuff is disabled such as windows firewalls... no firewalls at all ( antivirus level ) Remote desktop allowed income connection is set...

What i'm i missing here? :/

Easy solution. Dont use Microsofts remote desktop.

Instead use this: http://www.crossloop.com

It is so damn easy its pathetic. McFly, Bobby, and myself have both used it and I have used it to work on my brothers computer. It is simple ass**t. More so than the built in one with Windows. Best part is that its FREE and you do NOT have to make an account to use it.

As far as remoting into it i can no prob. like i said i use VNC just fine from within my home network and from the outside from school/work

But i was just wondering why Remote Desktop wasn't working one way...

Also, thanks for that software, didn't know it. will check it out for sure

Are you sure you have got the access explanation around the right way?
Remote access is available in Windows Vista Business, but not in Windows Vista Home Premium,
Here's a link to comparison of the features of all 5 versions of Vista

Hey Crash... never tried crossloop before and after your post decided to give it a try... It's an amazing product... very easy to use and since it operates through web port, no configuration has to be done on the router... Oh, it's just one of those things that finally makes your life so much easier... Thanks pal...

That's true. The advantages over a standard VNC setup is that you don't need to configure ports, and the interface to get connected is as simple as pie, which makes it great to give to somebody who doesn't necessarily know a lot about their computer, so you can help remotely.

The big disadvantage though is as Big Beavis said ... the connections get started through CrossLoop, which also means if they run out of money and shut down ... you're SOL.

OK, found this in the help- which explains it:
"You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to computers running Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Basic N, or Windows Vista Home Premium. You can, however, connect from those editions of Windows Vista to computers running other versions of Windows.

You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to computers running Windows XP Home Edition."

And from me:
(But you can to Win XP Pro)

You also have to give the computer you are connecting to a permanaent ip address on the network.
Also, if you are connecting through a router you have to open/enable port 3389.

And you must be an Administrator on the computer you are connecting to, and have a password to log onto it.

All this palaver is to make sure the connection is secure.

Hey, thanks to everyone! I guess ill just keep using vnc here on my local network. Pity remote desktop wasn't allowed in home premium since i bet 90% of the low budject computers come with that one now days.
