This is the PC version. I can submerge (by hitting left mouse button), but once underwater I can't actually swim around. I should be able to by hitting space a.k.a. sprint. I've tried with the default keys, tried remapping, even tried a Logitech gamepad...nada. What am I doing wrong here? I am stuck on the Amphibious Assault mission until I can figure out how to swim :/

I'd tell you but apparently my June install of San Andreas is no longer functional. :~

I know sprint is one of the keys...

You know how you have to press two keys in order to weight lift? Try pressing both of those. I remember one of them was it. Also, make sure you are pointing into the water. If you don't, you'll just move along the surface. Come to think of it, the fire key might actually get you to go under then you tap sprint to stroke.

Yeah, the weight lift keys are sprint and fire. To go underwater you have to hit fire (left mouse button), and this part works. Then you're supposed to be able to swim around by holding down sprint, while "steering" with the mouse. I'll try both sprint/fire together again, but I'm pretty sure I've done this to no avail...thanks for the reply.

Did you try tapping sprint once submerged?

Yeah...no dice...here's the weird thing: I click LMB to submerge, point straight down, and hit sprint - he moves his arms in a swimming motion, but I just float back up to the surface. It's like the char is too buoyant or something...I've tried every combination of move forward/sprint/submerge I can think of....bah.

I just installed the game yesterday. When I try it out later I can see what combination I use to swim. You might want to ask Crash as well, I know he just installed it recently.

I've got my guy to swim when he looked like Big Smoke so I don't think too much fat can prevent you from swimming.

...

Have you ever played the game before? Swimming isn't very effective. Each stroke doesn't move you very far forward. You have to use up pretty much all your air in order to really get very deep.

Thanks Michael - any pointers would be appreciated.

Yeah, on PS2 - it was a long time ago but I certainly don't remember having any trouble with it. Hell, on the PC version I can barely swim deep enough to have to hold my breath. Can't come close to drowning even on purpose, which seems like it ought to be a no-brainer :)

Weird. Hmm, it probably wouldn't help at all but do you have the 1.1 patch installed?

I just got out of the game here a minute ago. Seems like everyone is going on a GTA SA rampage.

It all works for me. However I have the keys remapped for shift = sprint and space = jump. So im not sure what to tell you other than to save the game save files and what not and reinstall.

I got the GTA pack on Steam, so I have no idea - I would hope it's the latest version. There is "v3.00" in the lower right corner of all the config screens if that means anything.

I too have the shift/space keys remapped in reverse, but have tried both that way and defaults. I can get him to make the first stroke underwater by hitting shift (sprint) but after that he just floats to the surface. Maybe I'll check the Steam forums to see if there are any known issues. Otherwise I guess an overnight reinstall is in order.

The forums is a good place to look. There might be a problem with that specific distribution. Steam wouldn't be selling it without the patch because of the Ao rating (ROFL). Anyway, the forums is a good place to look.

A guy on the Steam forums claims this problem goes away if you remove the frame limiter. Odd, but there were some weird issues in Vice City related to boating and the frame limiter, so who knows....worth a shot though.

May he doesn't want to be drowned. Ha, ha ;)

Well that's just too damn bad! I can tell you that if I solve this problem, that'll be the first thing I do :P

Aaaaaand whaddyaknow, it works! Woohoo! The frame limiter sucks, but I guess you just need to leave it on when you want to go underwater. I hate to think what kind of hackery in their engine causes this, but I'll just be glad I know the fix for now... ;)

Why is there a frame limiter on a pc game? Don't you mean Vertical Sync?

Essentially the same. It prevents the FPS from exceeding the display vertical refresh rate.

The frame limiter in GTA SA limits you to 26 fps - no idea why that number; perhaps it's all the PS2 could comfortably handle? It's certainly playable at 26 fps, but it's a whole lot better at 100+ :)

There are some other really weird bugs caused by the frame limiter. You can't take off in a seaplane, for one. And for another, the map gets all fudged up - your marker disappears, you can't scroll/zoom, etc. So very hard to imagine what the frame limiter has to do with any of this.....ah well.
