i need to change the dead hard disk from my sony vaio, i removed all the assembly screws including those behind the battery but cannot clear the cover from the base. It is fastened securely somehow from behind the function button F5. any tips of what this may be and how to remove the cover without breaking clips or brackets is much appreciated.

Sorted it out myself. Must remove the keyboard up and out first, to remove the palmrest (cover). Keyboard held in place by a series of clips around the edge. on moving a side the keyboard, 1 screw is to be removed, giving way for the palmrest (cover) to be removed.. :)

To remove cover palm rest, first remove all screws on base which have an arrow beside them, including those under ram cover (2) and remove dvd rom to show 3 more flat heads for removing. thrn back up and emove keyboard by releasing fron 3 spring clips at BOTTPM of keyboard, remove keyboard andremove one screw in centre of keyboard area. Now it will come off. It is this last screw holding in the centre which ispreventing you removing the covet / top - palm rest and pad.
