Let me start by saying I have searched for solutions for fixing/restoring my dead HDD, but I'm not sure what the problem is for sure. I
have a 500BG sata drive that wouldn't boot one day. So I tried to reinstall XP from the CD, and it would always get hung up on a file, (not always the same one) and I would have to restart the instellation. Finally I loaded XP onto a different hard drive and use my 500GB and a secondary drive. It was unreadable. I have tried norton disk doctor, BartPE, Active partition recovery and the windows disk tool. Active partition recovery let me see my files and folders, but could not recovery anything readable. I read a post about restoring the MBR, but I'm not sure if that is my problem. One last thing, when I right click on my computer -> manage -> disk management, it shows the drive as a healthy 128GB partition, and an unallocated 337.76 partition. Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks!

Are you still having this issue? If so, try reinstalling it as the root drive and use the XP setup disk to get into the recovery console, and use fixmbr to repair it.

Thanks for the reply, I still haven't fixed the problem. I've pretty much given up hope of recovering anything off of it, so i'll try anything at this point. Ill let you know what happens.

The drive is a Seagate Barracuda 500GB. When i double click on the drive icon in My Computer, it asks if i want to format the drive. When i tried to recover files off the drive with Active Partition Recovery, all the files were .jpg or .bmp files, and could not be opened.

Ill try to rebuild the MBR tomorrow or tonight.

The fact that it's showing the active partition as 128GB's could be the 48-bit Logical Block Addressing is messed up, which might suggest a corrupted BIOS possibly. Are any of your other partitions larger than 128GB's. If so and they are showing up OK would indicate that the BIOS is fine.

It is showing a 128 GB partition as healthy, and the remainder as unallocated space.
Im trying to run the repair console from the XP CD but, when I'm all the files are loading, i get an error saying a file is corrupt. The odd thing is it's not always the same one, and sometimes it actually will get through to the installation menu. I'll post more as I go.

SOO.. finally got into the recovery console.
It wrote a new MBR.
While still in the console, i typed C:/ dir.
"an error occurred during directory enumeration"
C:/ chkdsk
"the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems"
Any ideas??

So you can't see any of the folders like my documents or anything? And/or get messages that they are unaccessable? That jpg bmp thing is weird. How much data do you think you had on there? And was it only one partition?

From My Computer, when i try to open the drive it just asks if i want to format it, and from the recovery console, it will not list any files. Active Partition Recovery let me see all the folders and files, but I could not recover any of them. I had about 450GB on the drive and it was only one partition. I'm about ready to just reformat this thing.:~

Well I don't know how valuable the data is to you, but SpinRite is a good program for data recovery, but it's about $80 I think. There are no free data recovery programs I know about. They all let you download then look at the files and that's it until you send them money. I went through that recently.

And, of course there's Seagate's data recovery service...very expensive. But, they will at least examine the drive for free (less shipping charges) and let you know if they believe they can recover anything for you.

Another user (debo jam) claims good results with a program called "file scavenger"
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/69948/#522667

and another user (meats of evil) reported good results with "Ontrack"
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/69948/#522693

If you decide to try a program, check the net for fora and reviews about it before buying.

Ya they (Seagate) wanted $1800 to do mine. But said they could do a partial recovery for less. lol

Well NOW I have a new problem. I tried the demo of File Scavenger 3.2 and it was able to find some things, but now the drive is making a "tick-a-tick' sound over and over, and sometimes a spring sound like something is hitting someting else rapidly, then does the 'tick-a-tick' again. Probably going to have to contact seagate.
