Please if somebody can help me solve or at least understand it, short of a windows re-install then that would be great!

I'll start at the beginning. Sometime ago (not sure when), my mouse stopped working properly in games. The wheel would not be recognised. I havnt played many games over the last couple of years so it wasnt a big deal, and when i did i just put up with using the keyboard instead. Also, the wheel scroll and button continued to work as normal in windows and other programs, no big deal.

Recently played more games and i got frustrated at not being able to use the convenience of the wheel. So i thought id investigate. I looked into the drivers and i had extra logitech ones, i hadnt installed them since my last windows re-install so not sure where they came from, not a big deal...so i thought id uninstall them and delete the logitech files in the driver file in system32 folder and just use the basic xp ones, so on the next computer restart, xp recognises the mouse, loads the basic drivers and it works extactly like i want it too. The mouse properties are back to the standard xp options as opposed to the extra options i used to have, and the mouse works in games and everything.

So im happy, until i turn the computer off and on the next load up, all of a sudden the logitech drivers are back on, great. After looking around, i realise i have a folder in program folders called "mouseware", it isnt anything i have installed myself, and its not there by default with xp - or at least iv never seen in with any other xp install, so i have no idea where this came from, its not in the installed programs list or anything. I figure the logitech drivers are being reloaded from there everytime i uninstall them. Foolishly i delete the folder, thinking once i uninstall the drivers, delete the files and delete that folder, my comp should use the basic xp drivers and wont have access to the logitech ones anymore. All good in theory. However the computer wouldnt let me delete about half of the files located in the mouseware folder.

So i restart the computer and suddenly neither the mouse OR keyboard work in windows, keyboard works in bios, but i get nothing in windows except an error saying the system is missing LMousFlt2.sys (im assuming even if i could put that back there would be more missing). Anyway strangly one button does work on the keyboard - the internet media key. So i can load the internet but do nothing! lol. I tried another keyboard and mouse, they dont work either. Hooked up my Hard Drive to the comp i am on now to try and restore the files, but to no avail, i cant download that missing file from the net. Anyway so im lost as to whats going on!? I figure the only option i have is to re-install windows.

But I have loads of questions, like where did the mouseware folder come from? Why is it integral to using a mouse AND keyboard on my computer? i didnt install it there, surely basic xp drivers should cover keyboad and mouse? i dont understand! if the drivers came off the mouse and keybaord themselves, why arent they just re-installing them again automatically? why wont another set of keyboard and mouse work just like plug and play stuff should? i just dont undertand.

I appreicate this is a long post and people prob wont have the time or effort to go thorugh it all, but id really appreicate if someone could try and answer these questions so i better understand and maybe try to help me if possible. Cuz if i do have to re-install windows i dont want them damn logitech drivers appearing and screwing it up.

thanks to anyone who can help :)

Firstly, never remove any files or folders that you are not sure of. If you do want to
remove them, either A] Back them up somwhere or B] Create a NEW FOLDER and place
that particualr file/folder in there so then it can't be accessed. ** Non Patrionising **

Repair:- You can do a repair from your windows disk, to reinstall any lost files.

Clean the Logitech Registry (START, RUN, Regedit - and look for Logitech)

Mouseware is indeed logitech. Use the PSP for both keyboard & mouse to test out.
And when you install any logitech devices or any other for that matter, untick
the auto update - if you already didn't?

Firstly, thanks for the reply :)

Ok, well i did put the files in the recycle bin so i could restore them if something went wrong, so i didnt outright delete them. I thought i was airing on the side of caution there, but guess not!

I can't access the registry cuz i can't do anything on the computer!

Also, i havn't knowly installed the logitech software, but i never have auto update on for anything, too paranoid!

You said "Use the PSP for both keyboard & mouse to test out"

I'm possibly being extremly dense here but PSP??

Start by doing a repair from your windows cd, stick it in the computer and boot from it by pressing F8 when you switch the computer on. Theres an option when you go through the install process to repair the existing files, do that and you wont loose anything. After that worry about removing the logitech drivers. You may wanna try typing msconfig into the run box then removing anything to do with logitech from the startup list, that should stop it installing itself on boot.

Thanks for the reply guys.

LOL @ Tam, all i could think was playstation portable - i was like wtf?? Am i missing something obvious here! lol. I had aleady tried the ps/2 ports aswell.

I might try the repair tomoz, im considering a fresh install anyway - havnt done one in well over a year so it will keep the system running smooth - just a hassle keeping an updated backup of my data.

Anyways i'll let u know what goes down with the damn logitech drivers. thanks :)

Logitech drivers do my head in cos the conflict with my X-Fi drivers. Like for instance,
my QuickCam Pro9000 causes sound probs if i select the cancel echo/background noise.
Pain in the arse like

You might also try the re-boot with the internet physically disconnected, so any auto-updates before you have full control are prevented.

If you are thinking you always have the choice to select or deselect "auto-updates" when you install things, that's not always the case. You might be surprised at the number and types of programs that try to perform auto-updates without any user choice about it at all. After the program is first run, some of those types THEN give you a menu option to turn auto-updates off, but they have at least run it once by that time.

You can also install and run any of several available freeware programs that monitor and display changes in the registry, changes in the filesystem, etc. that occur when you install or run new programs. Those kinds of utilities can be very helpful when tracking down "who dun it?...what did they do?...and where did they do it?" scenarios.

John, my computer isnt connected to the internet by default, so i never boot up connected, and any programs i install knowly, il always check that crap but thanks for the tip, i'll def look into those programs you mentioned they sound useful.

I also usually know whats running on the comp, i somewhat obsess about the number of processes my computer runs - on loading i like to keep it around 26 cant remember off the top of my head (maybe i don't obsess enough ;) )
