I don't know how it determines who's logged-in, but I'm still logged-in and I've had the "latest" tab open in Firefox for the last 2 days or so, with ~20 minutes downtime for a re-boot.

I think if you've been active in the last 15 minutes, you're "currently online." After that, for another 15m, you were "last seen xx minutes ago."

What is it about HWA that brings thousands of anonymous viewers and no registered ones? Mayhap we have wonderful content, but discontented users?
I'd love to see a more varied assortment of posters here, not to disparage those that are here and continue to post.

Agreed. I think lately it's just been a few of us old users posting around. Besides us, it's just "one time" posters who only interested in getting help, and may never be seen again after that.

So, if I'm verified as logged-on (according to the "Welcome, john albrich. You have ...") but I haven't actively posted for over 15minutes, I'm not online? Is that how it works?

I don't even think it has to be if you've posted. If you've navigated the site in the last 15 minutes, you're online.

Someone try this: Log into HWA on one computer, but keep the other one logged out.On the logged in computer, navigate to the homepage, or something, and stay there. On the one that's not logged in, go to the "Who's Online" page. Your name will be listed. After 15 or so minutes, refresh the Online Page. It should say "Last seen xx minutes ago." Click a link on HWA to a thread or something within the site, on the computer that's logged in, then refresh the Who's Online page on the other computer. If it says you're online, there you go. If not, then perhaps it is since your last post.

Or...

PM Vitaliy. :)

That's exactly how it works. We don't know if you are staring at one page or closed your browser, so unless you keep browsing through the site you are assumed to be gone after some time.

Obviously the historical coupling of usage in the industry that to get "on-line" to a computer service you have to "log-in" that's responsible for the confusion. The inference is that whenever you're logged-in then you are on-line.

Perhaps if alternate more accurate phrasing were used? Instead of "online", something like

"There are 5 registered and 1525 anonymous users currently _ _ _ _ _ _ _ on HWA."

1) mucking about
2) causing trouble
3) bored and flipping a page every few minutes
4) avoiding work
5) looking busy for their boss
6) solving serious world-ending problems

:)

Definitely no. 6, "solving serious world-ending problems". In case you don't know yet, we are the last hope of man kind! HWA = Help the World Association.
