Inadvertently we started discussing it here: http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/55520/#531723

Basically copy and paste what I said earlier: There is lots of room to improve. To improve we need more people!!! need to assign more admins (for each sections for example) HWA needs to be promoted! We need top quality reviewers so that people would come to HWA to read hottest reviews on hottest hardware and while here, of course visit the forum. Need some quality guides written by HWA members, some of the craziest overclocks on the net (for example), and of course, the structure of the messages has to change slightly to allow embedding images in the posts, (smilies are not important, but attachments are) as well as fully loaded HTML editor, message preview, oh there's lots that can be done to attract more people. More people = popularity of the site. Popularity not only brings even more people, but brings some good $$$ too... And more people means more opinions - thus greater chances of solving someone's problem.

Mark Curtis suggested to implement contests...

Sure, you name it, contents (with real prizes), polls, whatever works... but most importantly is the promotion of the site. It needs to be everywhere! And again, high quality reviews/previews/articles/picture-annotated-thoughts/experiments is a key to gain popularity and to gain valuable viewers masses. As a role model let's take major sites like anandtech, tomshardware, extremesystems, etc... I foresee one day HWA will be as popular and on top of every charts, every search query would have HWA as a first entry (closest match)... But for that, we need some hard work. Involvement of members. Maybe even to build a hierarchy of users. People need to be motivated (encouraged) to improve and help HWA community and to do so, they need to be awarded. Reward doesn't have to financial or any sort of materialistic at all. All that people need is... just think about it, would you be motived to go on HWA no matter what if you would be responsible for overclocking section for example?! I would.
Not only the responsibility, but power is what motives... Bragging rights, no doubt is of course to satisfy your ego. Take me for example, I'm not claiming for anything, instead, I'm am willing to help HWA by writing reviews, share my OC/hardware experience (as I have the resources to make reviews on the new hardware) as well as general computer knowledge - but for that to be interesting, messages have to have HTML support and image attachment options. As a matter of fact, what if we create a poll of how each can contribute to make HWA a better place? Please share your thoughts.

Here's my crazy OC of a QX9650 on air:
http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/70782/?o=40#531111

Admit it, it would look much much neater with images as part of the message.
And as G. G. said:

That is an absolute great job getting that QX9650 to 4.5ghz on air !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As far as I can remember, you might be the highest OC'r here at HWA @ air/water/other.

So right away, we can start an interactive contests of the highest OC. C'mon guys, let's think about the possibilities! Let's all contribute to be the number one!!!

A wiki? Are there any computer hardware wikis out there? It would basically be a collaborated FAQ and how to guide that users can contribute to.

More reviews & Articles! Please! :)

One of the reasons I became a member, was the (almost) weekly reviews of Hardware, Gadgets, Editorials & other Geek stuff. But HWA has significantly reduced the number of these in recent years.

Thanks to all who are involved to the daily work involved to keep the site going!

BTW, what ever happened to the HWA Game Clan?

First, thank you for suggestions. I'm not ignoring this thread, I just wanted to collect some thoughts before I replied.

I am currently working on a news submission piece where you will be able to submit news stories to be published. I am still figuring out how the "approval" process will work, but most likely some distinguished members of HWA will be given that privilege. Also, we'll have a "leaderboard" type screen to acknowledge submitters.

wiki

Something I'm working on is adding a mini-wiki into every thread, after 1st post. This way we can collaboratively create/edit FAQ-like threads. Also, this would be extremely helpful to summarize "problem resolution" responses in large threads.

We'd like to have some volunteers responsible for these. See next item.

I'm not sure if we can pull off full-size Wiki at this point, although perhaps we can do that once we amass some bits and pieces.

We are absolutely open to select a few people and assign them to be experts in their subject area. Responsibilities would include replying to forum posts, compiling FAQs, writing guides, etc. We'll introduce a special title/rank to distinguish your contributions.

Any volunteers - let us know by posting here or privately via email. Please include the subject area you are interested in. Remember, your spelling skills count!

messages has to change slightly to allow embedding images in the posts

The plan currently is to allow attachments of files to messages - the images would not be loaded when someone reads your post, but instead a list of icons/filenames will be displayed and you'll be able to view/download the file by clicking on it.

Similar how you see files attached to email messages.

fully loaded HTML editor, message preview

Preview - great idea.

Full HTML - we're still debating what exactly to allow here. The problem is spam/abuse and some other issues related to keeping our database coherent. I think eventually we'll allow some kind of Wiki-like markup where you'll be able to do more than you can do now for formatting - lists, headers, better links.

A Wiki is a good idea.
What we need are new articles and input.
The last article was over a year ago, and the only one that was posting them was Sander himself.
The articles have to be centric to the product under test, and can't be just fan-boy input.
I think that this site has become so forum centric that it is loosing a great deal of it's following based upon non-dependent reviews and anylitical input.

I don't think I follow. If it is what I think it is (a threaded discussion), I don't like those. Additionally, for you, it would be easier to install a full blown wiki like Mediawiki than trying to develop one on your own. Yes, it needs to be policed but beyond that, they're pretty much user-maintained. The only real problem I see is getting the HWA theme wrapped around it. wiki.hardwareanalysis.com anyone? :D

No, it's not that. Basically, think of it as 2nd post in every thread being a wiki block that anyone can edit.

In a typical "How do I fix X?" first post followed by a dozen suggestions this wiki section would be used to summarize the actual solution to the problem. For FAQ/sticky threads, we would leave the first post to be a short introduction, and then use the wiki section for collaborative information.

It's easier said than done. We would need to integrate our user account system with theirs. Also, the problem with off-the-shelf software is that invites huge amount of spam that becomes a pain to police.

We have user account and database infrastructure for me to add wiki-like functionality easily. I'm not sure if we currently have enough participation to pull off a full-size wiki on hardware topics outside of our forums, unless all of you guys are sitting in the shadows dying to participate :)

I haven't seen it so far today, but yesterday I was TOTALLY put off by the imbedded adds in the forum post streams.
I understand that the mouse over popups are a necessity, and don't mind them much, but when I'm trying to read a tread and get a bunch of in-thread corporate "post", it is more than annoying.

Once you login you will not be shown any ads within threads and also on the right side and bottom.

We haven't made any changes to this in quite some time, so is what you saw yesterday somehow different?

Vitaliy,
I'm not sure. Sometime during my online experience with HWA yesterday I did get the "login" prompt, though I have the "keep me logged in" feature activated. It could have been that my software cleared it out, and have not had to see this in quite some time, if ever. I'm referencing adds that were inline with the post, as if they were post themselves from HWA members. Several per thread. Even while logged in, I do get the Netflix popup in a separate window, and get some of the right side advertisements. I don't mind the right side stuff, or even the mouse over stuff. The Netflix or at times past HP adds are an anoyance still, though I can recognize how they may be necessary.

I agree. No need for pretty much useless glitz or animation. Bandwidth continues to be a problem for some people, why add to the issue? Why make it more expensive to maintain and clutter up HWA servers with useless trappings and increased security exposures?

I'd looove to participate... Count me in for some serious overclocking... And since I'm a sysadmin, you can count on my help in networking section as well as linux threads.

Why not? I mean if it all comes down to bandwidth, than it's just a matter of a flag in user preferences to enable loading pix within thread or show them as attachments. I would really like to post with pictures that would be visible within a thread.

As for the HTML editor, can we at least have font/size/color options as well link parsing is a must! Thanks.

Whatever happens, don't turn this into one of those stupid token forums you see everywhere.

I think this forum is tidy, clean and easy to follow - some of thsoe other ones are a stupid mess of moving gif avatars, different coloured writing and a ridiculous amount of smilies that move everywhere and are atlkeat 40 pixels high by 20 wide or something.

I think avatars would be O.K. But no moving gifs!!!

HWA is thes**t - it's unique and tidy. But I am liking some of these ideas.

EDIT: Also, put me down as a moderator for a case section. Modding etc :)
