Basically what i mean is...I'm trying to recover personal data from a laptop hard drive by plugging it into my test rig.
the only problem is that the user has put the usual xp password protection on which then subsequently gives me "access denied" when trying to get at "my documents" and other sections of the drive (but not all)
so
who knows how to get access so i can copy the clients details before having to send said laptop back to useless currys who will then "lose" the data

try this one..there are several programs that can be used in order to access your files...one is bootcd or if you are familiar with win minpe edition..after u run dat livecd winminipe try to look for the program windows explorer inside..this program can access even if there is a password on said folder...

If the password protection is in the OS, then you can make a lower-level clone of the disk to protect the data in case of accidental loss/damage by the repair shop. That way if the data are encrypted on the source disk, the data will remain protected in the backup image. Better security for the client.
