This is pretty interesting.....
Test was done between two pieces of glass to show the effect of thermal paste spreading depending how you apply it.....

According to the article..... kinda looks like just applying a "pea" size does better in speading the paste more evenly..... kinda far fetch from what we are always told to apply a "rice" size spread.... hmmmmm

I'm also kinda curious.... in the case of Intel's processors with the old pentium dual core and with the current Core 2 Quads where there are two dies under the IHS that you would apply two " peas ", one for each die..... or just one " pea " would be adequate.....

I believe that the "pea" size, may be a bit too much, but the "rice" size may be just a little too small. Given the applicators usually utilized by HS compounds, I think that a single "blob" of the right size would do better overal than trying to get a "thin line" application to work as indicated in the additional pictures posted. If you remove the IHS, then the ballgame changes and you'll have to adjust your amounts as well as how you apply them accordingly.

Very good article. Guess I was doing it wrong all along. I didn't know about techniques for applying I just injected a medium sized dot and apply the rest of it with my finger coated with a plastic ziploc baggie. Next time I clean my Pc I'll apply either the "pea" size or the horizontal line on my quad and just let the heatsink spread it out itself.

Does that vertical line apply to AMD X2's as well, or just Core2Duo's? I haven't popped off the IHS to take a look to see how it looks under there, or which direction it should run.
