Hi guys,

I have set up a router so my flat mate and I can share our cable internet.

The problem is, sometimes, I can simply not access the internet.

As in, if I open up my LAN Status, the indicators are showing I am sending bytes, but not receiving.

A simple reset of my router fixes this. But I shouldn't need to do that so any ideas?

Cheers.

P.S: Next time it happens I will try nslookup etc, although I do not think any commands will work, because there is no activity.

It is a wired router with wireless capability.
But I have it wired and have it disabled as an wireless access point

It is a Level One WBR-3408 11g

I have the latest firmware for it also running on XP

I've never used anything from Level One, but the next time it happens, try to ping the router from a command prompt on your machine.

Try a ping to your Router as suggested above. Ensure 'ping' is enabled on the router so you can test that.

A few questions:
Do both PCs lose internet access or just yours?
If its both PCs double check to make sure the Router is not obtaining a local IP address from the modem thats the same IP address as itself. ex: if the modem is passing a routed LAN address of 192.168.1.1 ensure your Router is not trying to be 192.168.1.1 change the routers address to 192.168.x.1 x being 0 or 2 or something, Id suggest staying under 10.

Does the router show any activity on the port your PC(s) are on when the net drops?

Do you use QoS, an is it port assigned or just enabled for the whole router?
If its Port assigned, try disabling it, or enabling it for the whole router instead of just one port.

Check on those things an get back to us if it doesn't resolve the issue.

I had a feeling you would mention this problem when i read ure topic name hahaha...
my girlfriends router is the same exact way, but for all computers hooked up, altough she uses the wireless aspect of it..
as for me and my 2 computers, Same problem, one of the PC's simply cant connect to the internet... a simple reset and it goes back to working fine and dandy...

Altough, me and my girl both use Dlink routers...

Also i have read that this is a major problem in routers, especially dlink, simply because the hardware in some weird way loops the information it recieves and sends over a period of time that it simply freezes the whole router, and the only way is to reset it... so you cant really do anytihng about it

I can honestly say though, Linksys routers have never posed a problem for me of freezing.. id recommend you getting one of them instead, theyre a sister company to CISCO, which is the leading manufacturer in Routers and Switches...

hoped that helped :)

The router still shows activity when it seems frozen on our PCs ( happens on both )

The IP given to me by my ISP is not the same as its modem address.

Should I set my IP as static or automatic? Would that make a difference?

With these little inexpensive modem/routers its common for them to have a hissy fit and not work (even though all the right indicator lights are on). A power surge or a small sudden voltage drop or increase can make them unhappy.
Fix is to cut the power, count to 10 plug in again - goes again.
If you have to be rebooting the modem/router more than say once a week then you should have a look at where you have the power plug for the router plugged into. Is it on a power board with lots of other stuff on it? Other appliances, particularly ones that draw a lot of amps like heaters or air conditioners can often be the problem.
Check the ampere allowance of your wall power outlet, and then add up all the devices that you have on it when you have them all turned on - you may be horrified.
Sometimes you just need a replacement:)

Only read the manual as a last resort.

If you're using Vista, you should double check your devices are fully supported.

ISPs also upgrade their services from time-to-time, and this has caused problems for some people, including causing intermittent issues. The Help desks don't have a clue as to what's going on.

You should verify your modem firmware is still compatible with your ISP service. For example, I had to upgrade to be compliant with DOCSIS2.0 standard after my broadband ISP made some unannounced changes. Until I got the upgrade, I had intermittent periods of good performance mixed with periods of terrible performance, and occassional periods of what seemed like no response at all.
