Ok, I'm building a budget machine for a friend and ran into a dilemma. Which processor would be faster at STOCK?

E2220 @ 2.4ghz 1mb cache 800fsb 65nm
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16819116070
or

AMD 64x2 5400 @ 2.8ghz 2x512 cache 65nm
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16819103242

Both of these are within the price range and I can't find anything on the E2220.

Your thoughts would be appreciated! :)

In my experience AMD tend to run cooler, and can overclock pretty well.

Intels tend to be abit arsy.

Dealt with both Intel can be a little quicker due to FSB, but in comparison the same AMD spec could be 20quid cheaper.

altho thats my opinion 8)

I wouldn't say Intel's arsy for OC'ing. The Core Duo's are an Overclocker's dream.
A winner by a long shot. I've not looked at specs for the AMD so i will look this up before
posting any more comments..

Keep in mind that with the amd I would have to buy an aftermarket heatsink, which would bring it to roughly the same price. ;)

First off, the E2220 is very new, it is a budget dual core that is branded as a "Pentium Dual Core" but it is actually the exact same CPU as the Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 except it has half the cache. It has 1MB instead of 2MB. I would be surprised if the other 1MB is just disabled. So performance will be a bit less than that of a E4600, and probably more on par with the E4500 which runs stock at 2.2Ghz but has 2MB of cache instead of 1MB. If your not overclocking this becomes a much more harder decision, because if you were I'd say go Intel all the way as it should have no problem hitting 3Ghz. At under $100 it is a steal.

My thoughts:
E2200: Allendale makes me nervous. I can't ever convince myself to buy one because it falls too much inline with the simply pathetic Celerons. I think they only call them "Pentium" because Celeron is to Pentium as Pentium is to Core--the latter slaughters (I don't use that word lightly) the former...

5400+: I would say this takes the cake but, put bluntly, AMD's 65nm processors suck. It is a Brisbane and clock for clock, Brisbane's are much slower than the 90nm Windsor parts. Don't get me wrong, Brisbranes are great for a budget build and they are still much better than Semperons (pretty much the same story as Celerons). It is just that a 2.8 GHz Brisbane is closer to a 2.4 GHz Windsor. Also, I'd seriously consider getting a Retail processor instead of OEM for the much longer warranty and free (well, cheap) HSF.

Bottomline: I'd take the 5400+ (or maybe a Retail 5000+) over the E2200. Mind you, I've never laid hands on a E2200 so I might be somewhat biased against them. Having used a 4000+ Brisbane, I can tell you that they don't feel very quick even compared to an Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego (single-core).

So I'm starting to think that I should go with the Pentium. Later on down the road I could overclock it to hold off an upgrade. I already have an aftermarket cooler with heatpipes. Overclocking shouldn't be a problem as this will be the motherboard I will get.

If what Ford was saying is true, that a 2.8ghz brisbane is equivalent to a 2.4ghz windsor, then a 2.4ghz core2duo should be equal or better than the AMD?

Ford, I have a Pentium Dual Core E2140 and I can tell you it is pretty much on par with my 3800x2 toledo(939). While running at 400mhz less.

I'll probably be ordering tomorrow so if any one has any more suggestions feel free! :)

Any many thanks to the ones who posted!

This seems like a chip that was simply sorted into a lower-performance lot and had the cache disabled to make a processor that could still be sold. In other words, it failed the higher-performance/functionality tests so they de-rate it and sell it as something less. (a common practice)

Would that not suggest that one might be less likely to OC this processor with confidence?

Toledo has more in common with Windsor than Brisbane. If what you say is true, the E2200 performs faster than the 5400+ (perhaps by a significant margin). The 5400+ is cheaper though.

Now I really ran into a dilemma.

Should I get get the E2220 with the gigabyte board?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813128059

Or should I get the E4500 with this board?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128084

The E4500 is $3 over the max budget.
