Hey all,

Take a look at this - "300GB", "10,000 rpm", "16mb cache", "SATA 3G", and "Coolness" (literally) - HDD goodness

I betcha that this will be one of those items that will really put a hurt'n on your wallet and will have a big demand that you probably won't be able to get one if you wanted one.

2.5" hdd mounted on a 3.5" hdd format size heatsink.... That is just freaking cool...

I can't wait to get a couple of those things and toss them into RAID 0. I'll probably wait until they drop down to around $250 ish before pulling the trigger on them though.

I know somebody who has been waiting a long time for a WD Raptor that supported SATA 3.0Gb/s. Now he can stop whining about how my single platter 320GB is almost as fast as his dual WD 80GB's in RAID0.

I'd still rather buy a SAS/SCSI if performance and reliability was that important to me.

Hey Ford,

I betcha that the actual 2.5 hdd, san the interface, for this series of drive are the same ones used as SAS/SCSI units.

It would be crazy to have one production line of 2.5" hdd for enterprise SAS/SCSI units and then another 2.5" hdd for consumer level.

I think the 2.5" hdd itself are the same...

Gamers tend to buy these Raptor drives, because they probably do not generally like to deal with having to get a SCSI card. I tend to associate SCSI drives with business computers, workstations, and servers more than home computers. But it sure would be kickass to have a 15,000 RPM HDD :)

All the SAS/SCSI drives I've seen are 3.5" bay drives. I don't think 15,000 RPM drives can even be fitted to a 2.5" bay because of all the vibration dampening hardware they need. I think it's silly to do that with even a 10,000 RPM drive. I wouldn't trust these drives because I am sure they will have a high failure rate compared to others over time.

Remember, also, that a 10,000 RPM 3.5" hard drive might actually have faster read/write rates at the outer most edge of the platter than 2.5" 10,000 RPM drives. This might be a clever strategy for masking that...

A while back I saw a comparison between SCSI drives and the Raptor line. In the article the Raptor was faster than the SCSI drives in a single user workstation or desktop environment but it pretty much got its ass handed to it in the server space.

The review at Tom's Hardware about the new VelociRaptor seems to follow this same trend.

I have seen SAS/SCSI drives in 2.5" form factor. Here is an example in a rx2660 server that can run Windows, Open VMS, Linux, or HP-UX. It has front accessable 2.5" SAS drives.

Spec sheet - http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12698_div/12698_div.HTML

pic of rx2660 - http://www.computerworld.jp/images/_main/200702/583492.jpg

drives supported - 8 internal front accessable

36-GB 10K RPM SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) 2.5" Small Form Factor Hot Plug Disk AD140A
36-GB 15K RPM SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) 2.5" Small Form Factor Hot Plug Disk AD378A
72-GB 10K RPM SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) 2.5" Small Form Factor Hot Plug Disk AD141A
72-GB 15K RPM SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) 2.5" Small Form Factor Hot Plug Disk AD379A
146-GB 10K RPM SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) 2.5" Small Form Factor Hot Plug Disk AD333A

lookie...... 15k rpm above and the case that mounts the drive are no bigger than the drive itself.

Remember, also, that a 10,000 RPM 3.5" hard drive might actually have faster read/write rates at the outer most edge of the platter than 2.5" 10,000 RPM drives. This might be a clever strategy for masking that...

well, according to these graphs..... the new 2.5" 10krpm is faster than their previous 3.5" 10krpm

So it seems that the larger vs smaller outer diameter doesnt matter. I think it is more some with the areal density of the storage is what it makes the read and write of data faster. it is kinda like all the newer high capacity i.e. 750~1TB drives being almost, up to 90%, as fast as the original 36/74/150 raptors. So with the smaller drive and higher capacity.... all equates to higher areal density per platter making it faster than the 3.5" platters.

Jim,

that is because it is all in the interface and controllers when it comes to high I/O transactions. SCSI/SAS can handle ALOT more transactions per cycle than SATA/IDE format. That is why you see SAS/SCSI in enterprise server segment. If you strap a server with SATA or IDE..... you will have many angry users out there.

It sounds like a really good disk! I've read about it earlier on the net and watched some tests with it.

I want one, of course. :-) But will go for slower drives if it will cost too much money. I guess it will be pretty expensive(?) as someone already mentioned in this thread. Anyone who knows about the pricepoint on this yet?

Greetings!

Raptor drives typically launch around $300 per drive. They'll probably drop to between $225 and $250 within 6 months though.

All I can say is ..... WOW ........ Western Digital has just raised the performance bar once again for others to follow.
