Way, Way too many variables here. Like how and why?
We'd need more info to help as the two were made to work together, to the exclusion of just about anything else. Even I can get iTunes and a iPod working on Vista.
The only thing I might suggest is to find a solution that isn't designed and marketed by the ultimate control freak, Steve Jobs.

Overrated poo indeed! Ok, so you can access the iTunes account from the XP system and see and play everything you've payed for, right?
If so, then it is the iPod Syncronization SW and accounts that need to be looked at.
Does the PC see the iPod when you connect?
If it does, can you start a sync operation?
If you can, does it give you a syncronization error?
These are the issues that I was refering to in my original post.
I know you're frustrated, and your friend even moreso, but until I can see more detailed information other than "genuine and up to date" it's difficult if not impossible for me to help you.
Please be as specific as possible.

Insofar as your return post, you may be too used to the Apple way of doing things, that is, if it works, it works. Transference of Apple SW into the PC environment does not indicate the same thing, and can be and IS usually more complicated.
