British government is conducting trials on the tens of thousands of pervasive CCD cameras * with facial recognition software. They hope it will determine when someone is angry, upset, being 'secretive', etc. "... supposedly to prevent crime or violence before it happens".
I'm sure there's probably an algorithm for detecting 'naughty thoughts' in there too. I can visualize it now...the camera sees you 'checking out' a girl on the street. The software immediately estimates the age of the girl and then focuses on your face to see if you're thinking 'naughty thoughts'. If she's under-age...bam...it's straight to gaol for you.
BTW, I read sometime in the last month that Parliament is also trying to or has already passed new laws that allow detaining someone in Britain without charges for something on the order of months instead of days.
*There's currently about 1 real-time CCD camera for every 14 people in Britain (as of March2007). An average person is caught on camera up to 300 times a day. Some of the cameras can supposedly even listen in to conversations, while others can be used to 'shout' commands to you to intimidate you.(1)

Yeah, this has been going on for a while; it's part of the Prevention Of Terrorism Act. Everyone's up in arms about it, mostly because they don't want to end up with a British Guantanamo Bay
