Been meaning to mention to "less" trivial things about vista, but noetheless, they
irritate me. So maybe some of you guys could maybe help clear up a few things.
For example...

When I select RUN, and enter MSCONFIG or Services.msc, etc and then do my thing.
Well then next time I go into RUN and press M or S, it should remember what I
typed previously. It did this on XP. And it did do it one time when i installed Vista
many moons ago. Since then I've done a few formats, and it doesn't do this anymore.
So i have to enter the full command again! Yea it's trivial, but i'd like to know why it's
not doing this?

Another trivial one, is the search engine on google. After a period of time, when you
click on it, you see ur history of all the stuff you've typed in. If i decide to manually delete
it i have to click in each one and delete unlike XP where i just highlighted it,and it
would keep my finger pressed on DEL and it would clear. On vista, it has to be done
individually? Why's this?

Ok, yea I know, trivial as hell, but these things bug me. If anyone can suggest anything,
that'd be great.

Tam..

On both my laptop running Vista Home Premium x86 and my home built desktop running Vista Ultimate x64, it does remember the things I type in the Run box.

Try using CCleaner to clean out your history and things. If your using Firefox you can hit Ctrl+Shift+Delete to bring up the "Clear Private Data" box.

I am using CCleaner. I forgot to mention that. That doesn't clear the the data in the
search engine box (you know the box under GOOGLE). I had CCleaner well before
Vista.

Are you sure your not talking about suggestions? When you type things into the Google search box, at least in Firefox, it will give you suggestions based on what you type in. You should be able to clear your previous searches that you typed in using Firefox "Clear Private Data" or CCleaner. Suggestions will still be there. They are based on popular searches on Google.

Nah, all i'm saying is when you click on it, it drops down, and nothing I've used cleans
it, so on xp, i just highlighted it, and then pressed delete, kept my finger on it, and it
just scrolled all the way up deleting it. That doesn't happen on vista, you have to
click highlight delete, click highlight delete...see what i'm getting at?

CCleaner doesn't clean that.

Ok, I'll look into that. But what about the RUN command. You know how in XP for definate,
how it remembered what you typed last. Ex: If previously I typed "msconfig" and then
went back into RUN command later on, i'd just need to type "m" and it would bring
up MSCONFIG for me. This doesn't happen on my Vista?? I've installed Vista about
4 times since it was released. The first install done this sok. Every other install
has gave me this problem.

These are designed to provide info on clearing the run command MRU, but perhaps you can use the info to see what's out-of-place in your registry.

edit to add-For example, one of the methods cautions the user thus, "Be careful not to delete the Default value or the MRUList value." Perhaps one of these parms has been somehow deleted/corrupted/wrong-value in your registry.

That's some interesting links John, thanks. But, for the RUN command, I'm having
the opposite problem. I'd like those previous commands to stay there, so next
time I'm in RUN command, all i need to do is press "M" and msconfig will appear,
and I can just click on that to activate it. It seems like the MRU is always being cleared
everytime I exit it? Like I said earlier in the thread, when I first installed Vista when it
was released it was doing this fine. But since another format, it's stopped this?
Which baffles me all the more since I've not altered anything? Maybe I'm confusing
ppl here? Lol

No confusion. Losing the list is what I understood your problem was.

Perhaps I was the one that wasn't clear.

My thought was that if you look at how the MRU list is cleared, you might find some clues as to why it isn't retaining the MRU list on your system.

For example, the comment about requiring the "default" key to exist.

Perhaps on your system the "default" key is missing or corrupted, and that might be why the OS is not able to maintain the MRU list. (or, it could be some other item in that area of the registry)

Vista...Hmmmmm. I mean each to their own but the only thing I "dig" about vista is the CLEAN INTERFACE......

I have used X32 and currently X64 ultimate and it does nothing for performance etc that I see. In fact as its well documented XP is a tad faster....Of course I am looking at this from a pure gaming scenario. I know Vista is more secure etc. but was/is it worth the hassle......

And dont get me started about DX10 is a pure gimmick, I mean the main selling point of Crysis was the DX10 Effects that most can be enable on XP ffs.....DX10 will only be starting to be of benifit when the next windows OS will be hitting us..and then the propaganda will start all over again,

As far as niggle go...I hate the networking menu in vista...it tries to make it look like the operating screen of the air traffic control tower in JFK airport.

Yea I do like the Aero. Much better than XP's interface. I always thought XP looked
kind "Telly-Tubby-ish" if that makes sense. I like Vista.Always have. I was glad to get
rid of XP. It looked to old fashioned, although to some that didn't matter. You can
do more with the interface with Vista than you could with XP.

To clear all the history in google at one time:
Tools> Internet Options> General> Browsing History - Delete> Delete Forms.

Here is a link to an old article on it:

You should turn on Auto Complete
Internet Options> Content> Autocomplete settings.
Make sure 'forms' is ticked

The absolute biggest niggle I have with vista is the amount of system resources it uses when "idle"......it is around 780MB compared to XP which uses about 1/5th of the same amount. Surely this should have been the 1st thing that was looked at when the Service Pack was been introduced :o >:o >:o >:o >:o

Aye and the rest! Mine's sitting at 35% as I type. 35% of 4GB is 1414Mb. Unbelievable.
Although it does not affect my system, it's a pain. Simply because after an application
has been used, and closed it's like the system doesn't know how to "flush out" the
ram - if that makes any sense? For example, if I'm sitting at 28%, and then use
PerfectDisk to defrag, it shoot up to 40%. Once I've finished with that app, and closed
it, it should technically go back to 28% but doesn't. The ram stays at 40%.

Mines at 41% of 2GB
The Windows desktop manager and the windows sidebar are using quite a lot.
(As is Explorer, the email client I have open, and Windows Live Messenger)
However, I LIKE the Aero desktop and the Sidebar!
A while ago I read an article on tweeking the services you could turn off for XP to make it 'leaner'. Someone needs to do this for Vista.
