I have had a problem that has progressed over the last few weeks, and now has reached to this stage.
It started with the screen flickering at the top right corner, then horizontal lines started showing in the same place, now there is a white bright distortion at the top as well as the lines. Here are three pictures of the screen, the resolution is low as it is a 2.0 mp camera.

I hate to tell you what you don't want to hear, but looking at your pictures I'd say it's probably not a hardware / software driver problem. It looks like your actual screen needs replacing. You didn't mention the model number. I hope it's still under warranty. Screens can be costly to replace. Not a big deal to do the labor yourself though. They are usually just attached with a plug. I'm assuming you did the driver reinstallation to rule software out?

Thanks for the reply angryhippy, yes reinstalled the drivers, checked if the cables were seated properly and checked for cuts etc.

It's a Presario R3140US It's lasted about 5 years, so that's good, was hoping it would've been a cable improperly seated, but it wasn't that, the screen is going to run around 175, can get a new laptop for 400, guess I'll just keep using this until that day comes...

I myself have a Compaq Presario 1255 (still using Windows 98SE). I recently experienced the same problems detailed by the user. All the repairmen kept telling me to get a new screen. But I also read in some other forum that the solution was to kind of "stretch" the screen edges while you slightly press the center until you would get the correct image. It seems to have to do with the hinge connection and "alignment". Because I remembered having "bent" the screen toward one side while opening it once. Screens are certainly very delicate components. Also if you have one of those old LCD compaq screens NEVER wipe the screen surface (not even with water) since there is only a very thin coating protecting the screen. I suggest to place clear "saran wrap" over these for protection and forget about it.
