Doom 4 will feature better graphics than Rage
Written by Nedim Hadzic

Almost like a new game

Although both Rage and Doom 4 use the same id Tech 5 technology, John Carmack claims that Doom 4 will be so detailed that it will appear as if it ran on a "totally new game engine.“

Apparently, while Rage runs at 60 frames per second, Doom 4 is planned to run at 30 frames per second, which will enable id Software to throw "three times as much horsepower“ at it.

There's no mention of a release date, but since Tech-5 based Rage will come to PC, PS3, XboX 360 and Mac, that means that we’ll most likely see Doom 4 on at least two of these.

More details are expected at Quakecon event, toward the end of July.

I do not understand why id feels it's necessary to put frame limiters on its games...

I don't understand why id doesn't understand that graphics don't make games fun. Please, id, while you're still respected: Don't make another Crysis...

It depends on how they do the story, there is only so much you can do with a 3D shooter which is really nothing more than glorified point and click.

Ahh!... but what you guys do not know is that id software has now merged with EA. Yes I saw it at E3, what can we expect now? As for the 30fps limiter, I've seen it done in other games and it makes the game smoother if you don't have the hardware to keep it above or at a steady 45 to 50 fps. If done correctly the game will feel smooth, so no need to worry about that.

Now I agree with you guys that graphics and details doesn't make the game, if he's aiming that way then can we expect the gameplay to be the same as Doom3? Which was very repetitive and not creative at all. I still remember going through an elevator only to find that the exit is blocked and you'd have to find another way to pass while having cheap hear attacks along the way. Then go to next level and repeat. I hope they drop the spaceships in this game or at least fighting inside them.

What I would like to see with better graphics and details is F.E.A.R, not another expansion pack but a new game overall, with a new engine and everything. F.E.A.R had some amazing cinematic scary moments and it all combined well with the game's atmosphere.

To me, gameplay is on the second place lately... I, for example, would like to see gorgeous graphics and cinematic effects rather than long plot. Perhaps it is because indeed, there is so much a 3D shooter can offer... and saturation of such titles in this genre is overwhelming... Personally, I'm a little tired of walking around shooting targets knowing from the beginning that there will be a happy end. I'm kind of person that would go around shooting trees observing the destruction effect... climbing and jumping off a cliff to feel the virtual free fall and landing on the water (splashes, waves, i'm very meticulous), watching the shadows change as the object casting that shadow gets blown up or knocked off their feet; day-night effects (volumetric clouds and smoke) changes my opinion about the game...

Hope I'm not the only one with such an anomaly...

Well I'll take better gameplay over graphics anyday, although good graphics are a plus. I find most games that focus on good graphics are good, games that focus on gameplay are great. It's just way it is. It's hard to name a game that has both.

Haha yea that's what I do. We're both graphic snobs!

Same here. But I do like the 30FPS cap. Just like movies playing at 24/1080p it just looks so much better....

30fps lock out was on ET:QW's. And DOOM III. You can unlock the FPS in the
console. You'll be able to do the same with RAGE & DOOM 4. It's the game default,
but at least they let you alter it.

Yes I believe you are right. But I remember playing DOOM 3 at around 35FPS with an older graphics card of mine and it just felt choppy because the game made for 60 FPS.

I think 30FPS may be a great move though I would have expected a newer game engine and possibly DX10.1 and DX11 support.

I'd take gameplay over graphics any day. Whiles I was impressed with Doom 3's graphics, the game itself bored me to tears; it seemed to be a sequence of: Start in a light area, walk into a dark area where an enemy shoots at you until you work out where he is and shoot him back, backtrack until you find enough health to compensate for the beating you took whilst working out where your enemy was, then walk out into a light area, lather, rinse, repeat. I found Quake 4 in a similar vein. Give me FarCry or UT2k4 (even in single player mode) any day.

Hopefully, there'll be more to Doom 4. Perhaps this will follow EA's normal tactic of buying someone out, producing one decent game (like with Red Alert 2, NFSU2, etc), then burying us in a mountain of cr@p for the rest of eternity - isn't this just a way of eliminating the competition? :D

If they can stick to the old style DOOM games for Doom 4 that would be a lot better then Doom 3. Now if DOOM 4 was anything like FarCry, that would be AWESOME 8) 8)

I have to say, I do have a penchant for pretty looking graphics. But I do want a decent game to play.

However, all you guys saying you'd take gameplay over graphics anyday - exactly what percentage would actually want to spend $€50 on the best playing game ever, if it looked like something from 1999??

Agreed. Both game play and graphics should be out of this world. They need to do something new and innovative instead of the same old crap.

One thing i really liked about farcry was that the player knew they needed to get to some point but how they got there was up to them so you could try assaulting postions from mulitple directions to figure out which way was most effective. Ever since farcry games that try to lock you into a set path have bugged me.

This is one reason why FarCry stands to be the most funnest FPS game I've played with Half-Life 2 not too far behind.

DOOM 3 was great I admit but at the same time it was like being locked up in a big cage. The same goes with Quake 4. Let the player deside the where to run and hide not the developer.
