Hi

I have a MacBook Pro running XP SP3 and for some reason when my dialup connection(ADSL) disconnects it says "60s until redial".
When it hits 59 the PC freezes to a point where not even the mouse wants to move .
Good old Ctrl+Alt+Del doesnt respond.
Really strange.
Only happens when that happens though!

Thanks

I'd try to help if I could but Macs are something I have barely troubleshooted. Did you try finding anything on Google? Try searching for your model number followed by XP SP3 dialup freeze or something similar.

I can't tell from the title "Win XP ....enough said!!" if this is a Vista or Mac glorification thread. :)

There's insufficient information to suggest this is attributable solely to running the WinXP OS.

It could be a problem with the OS running on your Mac, you might have a 3rd party modem driver problem, etc. It could be due any one of a number of different non-XP elements.

BTW...You really "got me" when you finished the title with the phrase "...enough said.". A lot of people apparently think it somehow magically supports their position or argument. I don' think so, Lucy!

"Global warming. Enough said."

"Mac is best. Enough said."

"Sex rots your brain. Enough said."

"I am the Lord, thy God. Enough said."

edit-add OP title for clarity
edit-change "enough said" comment to make clear it's humor.

When starting a thread, please include details of the problem in the title.

Like for example:

(thanks, Sean!)

To answer the question, please see Juggernaut and McFly posts above. From the title, it just seems this thread is more about bashing XP than solving a problem.

My guess is you got bad modem drivers. Try to get better ones for the device. In my experience, 56K modems have the worst driver support because there is so many of them and drivers rarely support more than the specific version of hardware.

The first thing I would recommend is Windows update:
http://update.microsoft.com

If it doesn't find an update for the driver (even if it does, it may be incorrect), I really see no solution without opening the computer up and looking at the chip which would void your warranty.

The only other, unfavorable solution would be to buy a USB external modem with Mac and Win XP support. US Robotics should have something.

Edit: This one seems to fit the bill:

The main problem in providing help is that even when you were told more info would help, you still haven't provided any more details. You've described a fairly general "it doesn't work" situation, and because of that pretty much all I and the others could do was point you toward the modem drivers...which we all know is a pretty boiler-plate answer.

You've provided much better info with your other requests (e.g. http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/66250/ )
so you know more info can really help. And, I would think you know that a post that merely seems to be Windows bashing might turn some people off from even responding to anyone's request for help.

Here are some things that might help people provide other avenues of investigation:

Is your modem integrated, an adapter card, or externally attached.

If not integrated on the mobo,
*What modem are you using,
*Have you successfully used that modem before on any other OS or system...Mac, Windows, or even Linux?
*How is the modem connected? (USB, serial, wireless, etc.)

What drivers are you currently using, where did you get them, and have you verified that the drivers you think are installed are the ones actually being used?

Did you have any problems on WinXP before you updated to SP3? (this assumes you updated, but again, without knowing it's speculation)

Has your system ever locked-up before, regardless of whether you're running Mac or Windows OS? If it has, what were the circumstances?

Does your Mac require that you run WinXP under a shell environment or does it let you boot up cleanly in Windows?

Are you using any power management protocols that might interfere with the modem shutting down properly...e.g. a 30 second "inactive" device power-off setting, a screensaver timeout or similar?

What do your error/event logs report (if anything)?

John, in the future please just address the problem. If there is not enough info provided then ask him for more, and do so politely, this lowers tension in the forum and makes us look better.

You apparently just can't resist making things worse.

Try reading my first post. It did show more info was needed, and I did try to help, and there was nothing that targeted the person. I also attempted to take a title that would offend many people here at HWA, and turn it into something humorous so that more people might respond.

Responding to RG's "address the problem" statement, my second post simply and unambiguously outlined the reasons "why" people might not be able to address RG's problem: that he still hadn't provided any new information, and that his heading is non-topical and might even p**s some people off. I'm sure a number of folks reading that heading simply thought it's a typical "bashing" thread and didn't even open it to read the details. Of course, the consequence is that it means RG loses all possible help from those people.

There was nothing hurtful or directed at RG's person in that post. It dealt with the content of his post, and in addition I went on to provide a number of specific examples of the kind of information that might help.

Until RG addresses those things, without additional info for people to work with, it's going to limit what they can do, or might be willling to do.

I'm beginning to be really sorry I tried to help.

It isn't worth it.

ADSL!?! What exactly is saying "60s until redial?" Is it some dodgy software your Internet service provider gave you? If that is the case, uninstall it, plug the computer in via a CAT cable, and things should be sorted.

Do you have ADSL or Dial-up? They are two different things, and if it's ADSL you should be able to just plug your cable modem into your Ethernet port (or does Apple not even put Ethernet ports on their computers anymore?) using a standard Ethernet cable (not a crossover Ethernet cable) and it should just be plug and play.

Also, does it work fine in OS X?

LMAO, R G came into this forum for help and look what he went through.

If you wanna flame each other, PM each other!

If it is ADSL, what Adam said should work and no dialing should be required.

No, better yet, if you guys want to flame each other do it on MSN messenger or something so you don't waste any of Hardware Analysis's storage space for your crap. It seems everytime someone relatively new to the forum asks a question on here, there is a certain few members here that can not help but start dumb crap with each other instead of just staying on topic and addressing the issue at hand.

*** In a nutshell ***

RG asks a question.

John pretty much calls him a lamer (irrelevant to the problem), and when I tell him to please not do that, he admits to it:
You're right. I could have said that in a much kinder way, and I'll edit it.

RG then notices John's response and is not too happy about it.
Ammm......How about NO?
Its just the heading!! Come on man.Addressing the problem is what will make us all smarter.
Not your blabber about the heading that doesnt fit you mood swings or PMS.
So help me!

Then I proceed to tell John to please address the problem, as R G did not like his response.
John, in the future please just address the problem. If there is not enough info provided then ask him for more, and do so politely, this lowers tension in the forum and makes us look better.

Of course, John is not to happy about my response. But wait!!! FordGT90Concept to the rescue!!!! And sends me to view an image with a sign that says Shut the F**ck Up.
If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

k0rny, it can even be about the simple blue color of the sky. The point is not the topic. its addressing the problem instead of going after members, and then after me for telling them not to go after them. I hope the ADMINs are aware of this behavior, seriously, it's starting to get old. I did not start this, and I'm not here to be flaming ANYBODY, but if you treat me in an unjust manner, and sit around waiting for me to post and then bash me, I will defend myself.
