2.66Ghz for $284??

http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=...p;Itemid=1

I know its Fudzilla, but they've been pretty much on the mark with their Intel news in recent times.

That price seems very low unless the high end are like 3.66+ GHz which there is no indication of that. It'd be great if it were true but I doubt it.

It does seem low, but then again, who's to say Intel cant afford to release a mainstream part at that price?? It will be 45nm (which is mature now), it will be competing with its own products (Q9450, Q6700 etc), and will reqire a new motherboard and memory.

Therefore, to make it attractiove, the mainstream parts will have to come in at a competitive price point, particularly these days, with how hardware pricing is very aggressive.

There's no sense targeting a mainstream part at high end enthusiasts. The high end will apparently launch with a 3.2Gh, multi unlocked behemoth for $999.

The bread and butter is made at mainstream, so I dont see this as being out of the question.

But when this 2.66 GHz chip obsoletes those, the only thing that would allow them to move those older parts out of production is to keep the price high on the new stuff until old stocks are dwindling. There is nothing worse than having warehouses full of products there is no demand for (like what happened with the Pentium 4/D chips when Core 2 launched). The only way that price would make sense is if they are planning to have limited quantities of Core 2 chips available at the launch of Nehalem.

I suspect it would cost a lot more than that ($1200-1400+) unless the hyperthreaded octo-core chip is coming out not too long afterwards.

Nope, apparently Intel have changed their pricing structure on high end 'extreme' parts. Launching at $999 in 1000 unit quantities.

Ohhhh, you're talking about OEM tray prices. Yeah, that makes sense then with retailers putting a $100+ markup on them.

That price will quickly filter to retail/etail though, as it always does.

A lot better than $1499 tray prices though.

The processor price isn't gonna kill you, the memory will (DDR3 still costs three times DDR2). XD

As DDR2 did compared to DDR for the first couple of years. The price will come down on that [DDR3] too by next year.

DDR3 prices are on the rise IMO. The more popular they become the more they will cost.

Don't rule out AMD so fast, they can't be the best all the time. ;)

That only applies if supply cannot meet demand. pretty soon after demand rises, production will increase until DDR3 basically costs the same as DDR2.

As its failry new, of course it will cost a premium, but in time, you'll find DDR2 will cost more than DDR3
