Seen that already, pretty scary how powerful the radiation is. I'm definitely gonna try to cut down my cellphone use.

I have to say it certainly seems like a load of [insert preferred rude word here] to me.

Everybody's brain would be fried by now. I've had a mobile for about 12 years now, surely it would have had an effect.

It's fake. Even Readers Digest mentioned this rumor briefly in their latest publication:
http://www.snopes.com/science/cookegg.asp

Popcorn pops because of a minor steam explosion. Microwaves are specifically designed to excite water in food. The wavelengths used by cellphones simply don't achieve the same effect.

Microwave ovens use several hundreds of watts to get the desired cooking effect. A 10,000 watt microwave can cook a roast in 70 seconds. A cellphone is what, 5w? Yeah...

We could get about 2000 cell phones, align them perfectly to point at one point, and get the forks and knives out for some hot roast. :D

Again, they don't work in the microwave range of the electromagnetic specturm. Something bad could potentially come of it but it still wouldn't make any popcorn pop. I'm sure there are studies out there that examine the types of radiation produced by cell phones and subsequent studies that focus on adverse effects of those; however, because the power is still low, it would be very hard to scientifically prove it is actually dangerous.

Ford's right. There're differences in frequency, wavelength and power between a cell phone and a microwave oven. Most importantly, power.

Microwave in general have frequency of about 2.4Ghz (similar to some cordless phones and wifi), hence wavelength = speed of light (m/s) / frequency (hz) = (3 x 10^8) / (2.4 x 10^9) = 12.5cm. It uses huge amount of power, from 600 Watts to over 1000 watts.

Cell phone on the other hand, commonly have a frequency between 900Mhz (GSM) to 2.2Ghz (UMTS), so wavelength is about (3 x 10^8)/(900 x 10^6) = 33 cm to (3 x10^8)/(2.2 x 10^9) = 13.6 cm, respectively. It only uses a few watts of power for transmitting the signal.

Cordless phone and wifi uses even lesser power for transmitting, since only good for a small area. Though, some cordless phones are operating in 5.8 Ghz, that's a wavelength of (3 x 10^8)/(5.8 x 10^9) = 5.2cm, which for such small wavelength is potentially harmful, if not because of low power.

Radio and TV operates with much larger wavelength, in measurements of meters, which are mostly harmless to human.

All of these are electromagnetic radiation, or non-ionizing radiation, which is not believe to be able to cause damage to DNA. The general rule is the higher power the power, the more dangerous. The smaller the wavelength, the more harm it can pose to living tissues. Microwave oven works by dielectric heating, in which polar molecules such as water are rotated by the "wave" and heat up materials by this kinetic energy.

Most cell phones nowadays have a specific absorption rate (SAR) rating required by the FCC. SAR is expressed in Watts / Kg of body weight. The highest allowed SAR limit is 1.6 watts / kg. My cell phone has a SAR rating of 1.23 watts / kg. Here is good list of SAR ratings of cell phones, http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6602_7-6258775-3.html

Here are more readings regarding cancer risk and cell phones.

As the answer to the topic: No, cell phones can NOT pop pop-corns or cook eggs. LOL ;)

One time I took 100 wrist watches and scraped the luminous dial paint off the faces. Then I wrapped it in a piece of lead foil for 2 weeks with one marijuana seed. Then I planted the seed and grew an 85 foot pot plant in a secluded canyon with an underground spring (I could tell there was one by the Sycamore Trees). It had buds as big as baseball bats!

I never tried to see if it would pop corn though.
