I just got an HP DV5-1017nr from Best Buy for $1,099. On the website it is listed as follows: HP - Pavilion Laptop with Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor Technology - Onyx/Chrome Model: dv5-1017nr | SKU: 8907953.

The box and website say the cpu is a P7350 which is dual core at 2.00Ghz, but under system on the computer in control panel it says T8400 at 2.26, 2.27 Ghz. Could they have put a better cpu in the machine and do I trust what Vista is telling me? Sounds too good to be true. This was Best Buys special in their flyer this week. It's got BluRay. Here are the rest of the specs.

Hey Warren!

I'm from Brazil, and I'm very interested on this notebook!
I probably go there next mouth and may I ask you a favor?
Could you discover if the cpu is P7350 or T8400?
And.. may I ask you few questions?? :P
Well.. if that's okay, I'll send you a mail!!
Tks!
Juliana

You can use CPU-Z from http://www.cpuid.com to figure out hte details of the processor. Windows may be improperly detecting it.

I'd check what CPU it is using CPU-z:
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Download it, unzip it, and run the little application and tell me what it says. I believe the T8000 series is an older chip then the P series which is part of the whole Montivena/Centrino 2 deal.

If it's running at 2.26Ghz it might be a P8400 not a T8400 (no such thing as T8400...though there is a T8300 which runs at 2.4Ghz). The P8400 does run at 2.26Ghz. The P7350 runs at 2.0Ghz. It's possible they upgraded you to the better chip for whatever reason or someone messed up in the factory.

They could have ran out of the processors they were supposed to include in the order so instead, they upgraded them free of charge in order to fulfill the order by a deadline. It doesn't happen very often but it does happen sometimes nevertheless. You got lucky. ;)

BD-DVD player to boot. :O

Wow, that's great, the P8400 is a superior processor.

I'm thinking we all got lucky in that way. My laptop, same model, is also reporting the P8400 to CPU-Z and to Intel's PID utility. Unfortunately, the extra bang in processor doesn't prevent the machine from booting rather slowly, nor the hard drive from lighting off incessantly. The light never quits completely. Working with HP to get those issues figured out. Nice lappie other than that.

Your slow boot times are probably due to there being a lot of bloatware installed on your system from HP. You'll want to uninstall any crap that they installed that you do not want. Also you'll want to disable programs from starting up with Windows. You do not need to have a bunch of programs start when Windows starts, and I am not sure why HP and others has to put so much crap on these machines as the average user has no idea how to get rid of it.

I also bought this laptop while on sale due to this and other site's raves about it for the money.
While at bestbuy, they didnt have them up for display yet. The sales guy was setting one up for me to look at, I checked the proc out on it and it was the 7350... I asked him to open a second one for me to look at, and after a bit of coaxing (he said he would get in trouble) he did and lo and behold the second one showed as an 8400.... I am really loving this pc, and for the first time Vista. I guess vista is all about the processing power and memory.

I do have an issue with the HDMI out though. I temporarily tried to hook up my 47" LCD so I could watch some online movies, I got picture but no sound. tried everything, even uninstalling and re-installing the sound driver as the HP rep told me to do... Still no sound.
I will hopefully get that figured out next week, I hope it is not the laptop but rather a simple issue....
All in all tickled with the purchase. As many have said, it is a fingerprint magnet, but for the price this laptop is a bargain...

That is a kick arse deal man!! Is it the same model with remote, HDMI, etc??
If so, man what a steal. I am digging sitting in bed using the remote and playing blu rays on my 47 1080p LCD thru the HDMI.... WOW!!!

I have really hated HP for years, well, at least the cheaper models and Compaq, but so far this laptop is really high quality..

Yup, with the remote and I was thinking about selling it for 1200$CAN (1115$US) to someone, so I would of make 400$CAN out of it, but it was a gift for my fiancee so couldn't, damn it was a bad timing! Any how I just Hope that HP is still having some more like that!
