How much of an increase would I get going to a HD3850?

I was eyeing this one up

Thoughts appreciated. Couldn't find much on google comparing the 2.... :/

Update: Just found this too.

I own the 512MB 512MB -bit interface verison of the HD 2900 PRO which is actually better than the HD 2900XT. and that is 35%-45% better than your current card which I acutally owned before my HD 2900.

So going from that to a HD3850 I can honestly say from having 2 of the last gen's a performance increase of 65-80% on all performance increases.

Performance increase would be good, undoubtedly, but don't expect miracles, I think you'd be better off with 4850 in couple of months rather.

So the 4850 will drop to around $80 in a couple months? I highly doubt that Supreet! ;)

Thanks all, I will probably pick one up! :)

Ok, a little bit of an update. I was just about to decide when this caught my attention:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133232

It would cost $20 more (without the rebate) than the hd3850. Should I go for it?

No, not $80, but it'd certainly come down in price a lot, considering new graphics card life-cycle of six-months tops.

Seems like you already made a decision, all the best.

hmm not sure if thats ur best bet. Even the reviews boast 72% in favor of the 3850 card @ $89

I would have choosen that one.

as opposed to a 33% customer review on a $119 card. with equal performance.

Not sure what you mean, every review I read on the web, the 8800gt smokes the hd3850?

Also, Newegg reviewers have the tendency to NOT know how to set up hardware ;)

Mark congratulations on that card and let me say welcome to the 8800gt club! :_) It's amazing how well priced they're right now, I remember paying $270 for mine on mwave. :|
Trust me, you won't be disappointed with the performance it has to offer. You can go buy Crysis now and be happy :P just make sure to download the latest patch and latest drivers from nvidia.

*Edit*

IF that Asus card gives you trouble like the ones based on the reviews then get it RMA'd from Newegg and buy the one from PNY or XFX, I would prefer the one from XFX since their warranty covers damage done by overclocking and you get a free copy of Call of duty 4 with it :)

i was speaking price performance ratio the 3850 didn't get smoked, but rather beat. if that was the case i'm sure u wouldnt have posted this thread in the 1st place.

As for the price lvls u linked thus my suggestion in the above post...... Since u already purchased your 8800gt seems $100+ dollars i guess money price wasn't that big of a deal i ur case. cool beans enjoy ur card
