My prob is that as soon as I plug in a flash drive to usb, I get a pop-up that says media player has stopped working, and I get it whether or not wmp is even running, doesn't appear to affect any other programs. I have all the autostart functions turned off in vista, have tried different ports, and it doesn't happen when I connect any other usb device, I also tried formatting the flash drive, which I've had for a while and works fine in any other system.

You're not the only one with this problem

I read a bit on forums and a lot of people are getting the same error message with different causes. Some blame codecs, others blame drivers or other applications. Some have even reinstalled Windows and still get the same exact error. I wish I could get a machine with this problem so I could do some research and publish a solution.

Out of curiosity, have you tried another flash drive (different make and model) ?
