Hey all, I am going to buy an MSI Geforce 9800GT when I get paid tonight, and I was wanting to know before I did how much of a performance increace i should expect, currently I have an msi 8600GTS Superclocked edition and it will run crysis with my rig setup at medium settings arount 45FPS.

im looking for high or very high, preferably the latter.

will this card give me that?

for $170 I thought it was a hell of a deal, but I want to know what to expect.

thanks.

Edit:
I have a 22 inch moniter running at 1680x1050, rig specs are in sig.

Rig specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo 6700 2.66Ghz (clocked at 3.33Ghz)
Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard
4Gb DDR2 800 Corsair ram
EVGA GeForce 8600GTS Superclocked Edition
Antec NeoPower 600W HE Modular PSU
1x 80GB Western Digital SATA HDD
1x 160GB Seagate SATA HD

Before buying the GTX 280 I had an 8800GT (675MHz) basically the same card as the 9800GT... I could run crysis at 1680 x 1050 all settings on High with no AA. Any higher settings and it would start to get choppy. If you wan't to play it at that resolution with everything on very high you're going to need a more powerful card then a 9800GT.

The 9800gt is still a good card and is enough for today's games. The only very high settings that is worth enabling in my opinion is the Shaders and the Post Processing effects, everything else is very hard to notice or doesn't offer any visual improvement at all but it will drag down the frames per seconds to unplayable levels. If you balance out the settings you can achieve some very high settings and get very good frames.

how about this overclocked 9800GTX+, its $169 after MIR.

I'm not sure if it will net you all Very High settings but it will allow more head room than the 9800GT which should get you atleast a mix of High/Very High if you leave the AA off.

instead of doing that, If you plan on dropping that kind of money on video cards anyway, I would suggest you save your money for a couple weeks and buy an overclocked GTX 200 series card paycheck after next. SLI will give you mixed results... A single powerful card will always be fast where two slow cards in SLI will be fast when the game is optimized for it and your nVidia driver isn't busy crashing.

I run crysis at 1920x1200 all settings on Very High with 2x AA... it is playable with 4xAA but occasionally studders so I dropped it to 2x.

I just bought a BFG 9800GTX+OC for 179$, you can find better deals. Check out the ATI HD4850, it's better than 9800GT you're buying. I'll let you know how the 9800GTX+ goes tonight!

Edit: Yes get the 9800GTX+ ^!

Its definately $4 worth of faster than a 9800GT, you should be happy with that card.

Yikes! That thing is massive! i will have to move my hard drives down to get it to fit! it will fit in a full tower atx, right? i mean, i would assume it would because thats the biggest they come but yeah lol

you're just going to have to wait and see, I've never owned one of the 128 stream processor nVidia cards so I can't really say. I would guess you'll get to move a couple of (graphical) settings up to Very High as that card is about 13 - 15% faster than the 8800GT I had.

I fit the GTX 280 in a Lian Li PC 60B II Plus (a mid tower case)... I did have to slide the hard drives as far forward as they would go without hitting the intake fan to get it to fit though. If you've got a full tower you should be fine.

It fit in my case, but I had to move my harddrive to another slot. No big deal though, it fits fine although it's HUGE. Performance is through the roof though!!!
