I have this computer :

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01048277&...ct=3436818

The link will show all the specs, and it came with Windows Vista. I formatted my hard drive and installed Windows XP and installed Service Pack 2. I purchased a new 650 Watt power supply and a new Ati Radeon 4850 video card. The problem is that when I insert the ATI Radeon into the PC, and boot up the computer, I have no sound.

I have tried un-installing, and re-installing the sound card drivers, however nothing works. The only thing that seems to work is to remove the ATI card completely, and the sound works fine just using onboard video.

I'm not sure what to do, can anyone help?

There's a few things to check...

1) Make sure your speakers are plugged into the correct port on the computer (it is usually green).
2) Make sure the correct device is selected for audio playable:
Start -> Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices -> Audio tab
Under "Sound Playback," make sure your normal audio card is selected. Directly under that, click on the "Volume..." button and make sure the "Master" is not muted/down as well as "Wave."
3) Check the device manager for issues with your audio card:
Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> "Device Manager" button

I am not sure about HD 48xx, but the previous generation came with a built-in sound card.
I remember when I bought the HD 3850 for my brother, I head to deal with similar problem.

If the HD4850 also has a built-in sound card, you will have to install the driver for the sound card and then disable it from the device manager.

I hope that you find this helpful.

good luck

If what Zero said is true then check to see that the 4850 isn't canceling the motherboard onboard audio. Check that the onboard audio is enable in the Bios.

The built in ATI sound card only works throught HDMI. And you can have both working at the same time with no problems. This is what I've been doing for a wile now. The ATI drives my 46" HDTV home theatre and the on-board sound drives my PC speakers.

Is your motherboards built in sound based on Realtek? If so install this ATI driver and re-start. Then go into your motherboards sound card properties and enable your on-board audio. You can find this in Control Panel.

Don't rule out AMD so fast, they can't be the best all the time. ;)

Also make sure you have up to date audio drivers for your motherboard.

I am having this same issue. Anyone figure out a solution? I installed the Radeon HD 4850. Sound works great through the DVI output converted to HDMI and into my TV, but now the onboard sound does not work. Everything is plugged in correctly, sound is on, etc etc. I am using Vista.

Hi,

I have a 4870 X2 and had the same problem. You need to disable the sound card on he graphics card in the device manager. Then you will need to re select the on board sound card in the sound options as the ATI one over rides it when installed.

really annoying I know but an easy fix, also if you play games you may need to re select the correct sound card in them also.

let us know if this works for you
