Hello,

I recently bought an Acer wide-screen monitor (model AL1916W) max res 1440x900. Is there any possible way to play old games in a 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768 resolutions? My card is an ASUS GF6600/256MB/AGP8x. Drivers are 175.19.
Any help highly appreciated!

Yes, but it will stretch and not look so great.

You have a number of options here. You can either deal with stretching, as Ford mentioned, or you can either find a hack for the specific game to allow it to display a widescreen resolution, *or* you can go into your graphics control panel, and look for something like "Flat Panel Scaling," and turn it off, which will display the games at their native resolution, and not scale them to the full widescreen. The only downside here is that you'll have a black border around your game, and if it's a small resolution, 640x480, then you'll have a little-ish window.

Quite a few games will allow you to use widescreen resolutions where not offically supported. UT2004, for example, lets me run it at 1440x900 by editing UT2004.ini. The HUD gets stretched disproportionately, but the game itself is rendered correctly.

That's not a guarantee for every old game, but quite a few. Just Google for the specific game and something may pop up.

Ideally, it would be best to run them windowed. What games specifically are you having trouble with?

Old games for Windows such as Quake 2 (I can play it only windowed), Quake 3 (I have a .rar and I don;t install it and it doesn't run on this monitor), Duke_w32 precompile of Duke3D, The Suffering, Test Drive 6, SoF1, AvP1, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3... I know they're old, but they are also my favourites ;] Also, RE4 doesn't work, too (it is also a .rar I keep on my hard in case the XP is being reinstalled).
What was that Flat Panel Scaling option and where should I look for it? I haven't found such.
Аlso- Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines doesn't run in a supported res!
edit: fixed the problem with registry value editting
and some games with .cfg editting...
others just playable only windowed... damn!
