Haha! a certain topic came to mind on the discussion of Nvidia taking the same approach on making the dual gpu in one solution. The Green king will never back down.

*Edit*
Very nice, it looks very promising but I think that no matter how good the performance is the price is what will determine this to be the seller since the situation with money isn't improving at all. :(

I am sure it will be overpriced just like the 260 and 280's are.

But, nonetheless pwnage.

I heard 4850X2's are coming out soon too.

ha ha ha the inquirer's article is hilarious...

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/10/08/nvidia-...0-gx2-roll

I love this portion....

If you are underwhelmed, then the dualie card is for you. We haven't seen a code name for it officially, but NV AIBs are talking about it. Take a 55nm GT200b/206 and put two PCBs together a la the 9800GX2, and you get the idea. There is one minor problem this time... heat.

The G92 (8800GT/9800GTX/GT15x) was coolable, barely, with a single slot cooler. The GT200 is not. Even with a theoretical 20 per cent lower power draw, you would be at 290W for a dual 55nm 260 clone. If you use a 260-216 or jack the clock up, you are at 300+W in an instant, and we can see 350W without trying hard.

Normally, you would do what ATI did with the 3870X2 and downclock it a bit. Not much, just a little, and take the power savings. The problem is that the 260 loses already to the cheaper 4870, and two of them wouldn't be much of a fight against the 4870X2. At a minimum, you need 2 260-216s, or better yet two upclocked 260-216s to pip the 4870X2 and claim a hollow victory.

NV is in a real bind here, it needs a halo, but the parts won't let it do it. If they jack up power to give them the performance they need, they can't power it. Then there is the added complication of how the heck do you cool the damn thing. With a dual PCB, you have less than one slot to cool something that runs hot with a two slot cooler. In engineering terms, this is what you call a mess.

Sounds like they will be clawing a bit to make sales.

Are they really going with 2 PCBs? OR is the Inquirer just making comments based on assumption?

ALthough I do agree with them if they indeed do make the new cards based on 2 PCBs.

Hey Tom, what temp does a 260 run at?, idle and load.

Will have 2 GPUs be an issue?

It depends on the fan speeds.I keep them at 45% and the temps at idle stay around 54c and 63c when running games

Offtopic: 4870x2's are already out in Sweden, a while back... Im still stuck on what Card i should get, my rig as u can currently see, however ill prolly get a P45 chipset or so, and i game on a 21" monitor.. Any suggestions?

On topic: Nvidia will definetly have their cards overpriced like usual, I love that ATI really came out with some powerhouses for a graphic card at a really appealing price.. Cant beat the 4850's price situation..

And how much will the GTX260X2 cost? It looks like AMD will be forced to release the HD 4850X2 and the upcoming 4970 (x2) sooner rather then later :P

Don't rule out AMD so fast, they can't be the best all the time. ;)

I think the HD 4850 X2 will have enough horse power to compete with the GTX 260 x2, unless Nvidia plans a massive GTX 280 x2:blush:

The release of Nvidia’s GT206, a revision of the GT200 core, is right around the corner. It will be based on a 55nm process, making it much smaller and more cost efficient for Nvidia to produce. Currently they are having a hard time making money on the GTX 260 and 280, because they are so expensive to produce. The new cards will be cheaper to make, and most likely be clocked higher. The 55nm process makes a GX2 card a barely viable option, where a GX2 using the 65nm G200 would be simply impossible because of heat restraints. This card will undoubtedly be the single-card king when it is released.

Nice! :)

Is ATi not opting for 45nm with the new GPU's out in a bit??
