Hi guys,

I am having trouble installing/booting Linux off my ext HDD.

My ext HDD is an Imation Apollo 2.5 USB drive.
I am trying to set it up so i can plug it in and boot into Xubuntu wherever I take it.

How do I do this. I have tried unetbootin and it does not work. I have tried installing Xubuntu from within windows onto ym drive and when i reboot and boot from the ext HDD it takes me straight to the Grub command prompt and will not load the Kernel automatically. If I install it onto my other SATA HDDs it will boot into Xubuntu fine, but for the life of me I can not get it to boot into Xubuntu off my external drive.

Does anyone know what to do?

Thanks guys!

I remember asking a similar question a while ago. I think all the replies told me it couldn't be done - you can't boot an OS from an external drive. Not sure though.

Why is it not possible? If you can boot Linux off a flash drive which is also USB, why can I not boot off an ext HDD that is also USB? Is it because it is SATA to USB?

Surely, there has to be a way to do it.

Thanks for the reply k0rny
