:P

More like, it takes me for-f**king-ever to get my install set up how I like it, so I'm not going to trash my perfect Vista set-up just to install RC1, then trash that just to install RTM.

Vista -> 7 RTM works for me.

Well i already have my programs to copy into the programs file, my new taskbar (quick launch links), and start menu shortcuts saved to their own folder, so it was only a couple hours to reset and reinstall everything. I went from build 7100 to RC build 7100 and there are some things that are bugging me in the RC that worked in 7100 so I don't know what they did.

When I went to install Riva Tuner 2.09 and 2.24 I got the same message that "this version of Windows require all drivers to have a valid digital signature". Then, in a second window "Cannot load Riva Tuner64.sys driver" A third window said "Driver signing enforcement must be disabled in order to start Riva Tuner under Vista x64. Do you want to disable driver signing enforcement right now and reboot the system to apply these changes?" I did but it still wouldn't work. If I try "troubleshooting compatibility it tries to load the 32bit XP drivers under windows compatibility mode. And I can't seem to find where I need to go to disable driver signing enforcement? I also tried all the other run as administrator etc. stuff.

Now i have the stupid nVidia OCing bloatware program running just to get my GPU fan at 100%. My card runs hot otherwise. Even at 100% I'm at 63C idle and into the 90's when gaming. I had to order an Accero S1 yesterday that should be here in a couple hours so hopefully that will work, but I might have issues with it and the position of my memory.

My custom trash bin icons don't switch from full to empty. When I click on the mouse arrow it places the cursor one space back from where I want it. Other than that and a few 0x0124 blue screens that I haven't figured out yet, I've pretty much abandoned XP except for recording. I can't seem to get audacity to record my streams, and can't find working Realtek drivers for my Realtek HD sound. The MS drivers only give me line in as a source, with no system mixer option. I suspect that's by design related to DRM crap considerations. And media player won't play my downloaded music from Rhapsody

Interesting thread. I'll add a couple of my favorites.

Process Explorer

Shows you every process running on your windows system in much more detail than the built in task manager.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

WinDirStat
Scans your computer and gives you a visual representation of files/folders and how much hard drive space they consume.
http://windirstat.info/

Daemon Tools
Optical drive emulation. This software is extremely useful especially when used with ImgBurn which was previously mentioned.

Hmm weird about Riva. I have it working fine on my 7100 Build.
I also have the 2.24 version on my windows 7 64Bit. Have you turned off the
UAC as well? Disable Driver Enforcement (In Vista) is when you press TAB or F8
for safemode. I'll boot up the 7100 Win7 and check out some stuff for you.

Tam I tried a cmd prompt to disable the driver signing crap I downloaded a program that is supposed to sign your driver for you, I tried the F8 thing too. What nVidia driver are you using? Nothing I did could make RivaTuner work. Then I downloaded the EVGA Precision 1.7.1 Did everything I wanted RivaTuner to do and more. With a simple interface and LOTS of available settings. I don't have an EVGA card but apparently it's not required to run the program. Check it out. Now that that's out of the way, I'm off to muck about in the registry.

Program: EVGA Precision 1.7.1

Purpose: Video Card Tweaker/Overclocker This program allows you to fine tune your GeForce graphics card for the maximum performance possible, with Core/Shader/Memory clock tuning, real time monitoring support including in-game, Logitech Keyboard LCD Display support, and compatibility with almost all EVGA (and other) graphics cards.

Download and un-compress the file. Copy and paste into Aquamark3 program folder overriding current file. Works like a charm.

Application: AML Soft Free Registry Cleaner

What does it do: Cleans registry. Creates a Reg back up. Cleans temp files. Process manager. Registry Search Engine, Start up program manager, Uninstall programs manager.Simple easy to use interface.

Verdict: Works great. Not one of those free programs that shows you what's messed up but wants you to buy the program to fix it. This one is the real deal. I downloaded this to work on some HP crapware system with about 20 different toolbars installed and no uninstall programs. I had to delete them by hand and then used PCTools Registry cleaner which showed me all the fragmented and orphaned registry entries then wanted me to buy it to use it. This one took care of all the problems in about 20 seconds. For free!

<Article>

Application: Piriform Defraggler

What does it do: Defragments drives AND single files/folders. leaves the Windows Defragger program intact (doesn't take it over like Diskeeper does).

Verdict: works great! From the people who make CrapCleaner

Link: http://www.defraggler.com/

<Article> From everyone here at Piriform, the company that brought you CCleaner and Recuva... we now bring you a file defragmentation tool... Defraggler!

It differs from other defrag tools on the market, by enabling you to quickly and simply defrag the files you want to, without having to process the whole drive. Simply run it, select the file and defragment in seconds. No more struggling with the Windows defragmentation tool!

And remember like all Piriform products, Defraggler is completely free for both corporate and individual use.

Application: DBAN Darik's Boot And Nuke

What does it do:Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot disk that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

DBAN is a means of ensuring due diligence in computer recycling, a way of preventing identity theft if you want to sell a computer, and a good way to totally clean a Microsoft Windows installation of viruses and spyware. DBAN prevents or thoroughly hinders all known techniques of hard disk forensic analysis. So does a sledge hammer if you're really THAT paranoid!

Non-freeware enterprise edition for multi drive wipes also available. http://www1.techwayservices.com/about-eban/

Verdict: Haven't tried it but Canadian military awarded them a contract for data disposal. Open Source

Application: Anomos

What is it: A Bit Torrent Client

What it does: Anomos is a pseudonymous, encrypted multi-peer-to-peer file distribution protocol. It is based on the peer/tracker concept of BitTorrent in combination with an onion routing anonymization layer, with the added benefit of end-to-end encryption. By combining these technologies, we have created a platform where by no party outside of the trusted tracker will have any information about who a peer is or what they are downloading.

Application: Synergy

What is it: A software K/M solution

What it does: Syncs two or more networked computers and monitors to the same keyboard and mouse. Shares clipboard text data.

I use it at work only, and only for a few days, but it's pretty great being able to zip your cursor from one monitor onto the other one and have it be an entire other PC.

Application: CuteWriter

What it is: A little program that turns any new or previously written document into PDF format. Just go to tools and hit Print. When the printer properties window opens just changed the printer from your default to CutePDF Writer. It prompts for a save location and almost instantly you have converted it to a PDF doc. Requires you download the program and a converter. About 9MB's total There's also a pro model but it's not free. The free version works great with Windows 7 (I tested it). No watermarks! No Popup Web Ads!
