I searched the forums and the only results that i found were from 2005 or older.

I want to start a website as i am just now learning "dreamweaver with photoshop" and other programs.
I will start out simple, then as i learn more i would like to expand it a little bit.

Question:
What is a good user friendly site out there. I will post some links to some, but i thought perhaps some other hwa people had there own or make web pages and could give some good info.

How much space will i need?
The only one i have heard of before is "tripod" but i see it only has 20mb of space.
I will probably only use the main page but have a few quick links to other pages. I would like to post some picks, perhaps only 12 at a time, but i would like to use decent quality pics.
What about people being able to find the site via google? (local people so that they can come down and buy products from me). Do you have a bar like in youtube that you can put your info into then the search engines track you down?

Can you recommend a good site to help teach me how to build a site?
I dont expect to have one overnight, but i would like to build on the site as i learn.

I started off exactly the same way as you, with all the questions and the complications, except at the time search engines and many forums were still under development and I had nowhere to obtain as much info as there is available now.

What I did was I focused on learning Dreamweaver and Photoshop, and found out the freebie websites were too annoying and controlling, so I bought my own domain and hosting, and started building my website. Years later http://www.letheonline.net/ is visited by thousands worldwide, services by: http://www.surpasshosting.com/ and http://www.surpassdomains.com/

Can you recommend a good site to help teach me how to build a site?

Google is your friend. Start with basic HTML, you may not even have to learn HTML (although it is recommended) if you use Dreamweaver.

Some stuff that helped me along the way was learning CSS and simple JAVA scripts like submit forms and buttons. Give it a shot at Dreamweaver, could help you a lot along the way, and buying your own website and setting it up can prepare you for future projects - It's all a very interesting ride.

Thanks for all the good info.

i enjoyed reading your site also.

Im sure i will enjoy this ride of learning, especially when it i start seeing results.

As for my website. I have a local small business that repairs small engines. Lawnmowers, weed eaters saws etc..

None of the other repair shops in town have a site up, so i figured i would try to make my own. As i make a good profit on selling reconditioned lawnmowers, i wanted to post pics of them and a little info about them on the site as i get a lot of calls asking for used mowers. This way Instead of me describing it to them and taking 10 min + on every phone call, i can just refer them to the site.

I figured i could also put on a few tips, like how often to sharpen there lawnmowers cutting blade etc..

A map with directions to the shop. Fortunately i am on the main highway through town and i am very easy to find :)

There you go. You start with the ideas and implement them as you go along. You could also download or purchase some website templates and just fill them in with your own information. Thanks for visiting my site.

For what it's worth, I found FrontPage98 to be the most user-friendly and easiest piece of software to learn with. You can make your web pages on a WISYWIG basis and there is an option to look at them in HTML, which made it easier for me to learn.I also used IIS, free with most Windows, which enabled me to put up my website on my network so I could surf it from other computers using different browsers, checking it worked before posting to an IP website. I tried most of the free hosting websites, and found fault with all the ones I came across in terms of control. One thing I did learn was to try to make and use your own templates, this makes addition and edits easier.
This is purely personal opinion, and not intended to detract from others.

Thanks again for more responces.

I had just heard of "frontpage" a few days ago, but i havent looked into it yet.
As far as browser compatibility, DW cs4 will allow you to open the site in any browser installed on your pc to test compatibility. Until i really know what i am doing, i am just going to go with the free hosts. Once i get my site set up to where i like it, i figure if my domain name is available, i can always transfer it over.

Good find, i hadnt seen that page yet. I am too far into my current project to drop it to check out the google site builder atm. From watching the video, it seems so easy a cave man could do it.

.............................
As far as my progress, i have been using this guide to walk me through (link below). I also found a dreamweaver cs4 tutorial on "softarchive.net" To help teach me also.
http://www.thesitewizard.com/gettingstarted/dreamweaver-cs4-tu...al-1.shtml

I just used photoshop to build a ...well.. a somewhat poor looking banner/logor. It looks like the sign i have on my building. I have a fun business card , so i scanned that and and put that close to my banner/logo.I may try aftereffects to make a nicer gif one.

I am still a ways off from completing my site, though it is up and running, with out links, and i just have the main page., But it has been fun/tiring learning. But i will come out better for learning it. I have had a few people ask me if i could help them on there sites in the past. Hopefully i will be good enough in the next 6mo or so to do so.
