So I went and grabbed a Gateway (meh) DX 4200-09. I know it's not a gaming rig, but from what I can see it can run some newish games decently (haven't tried, but spec wise)

The specs are as follows:

Processor AMD Phenom(tm) 9100e Quad-Core Processor

Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
Gaming graphics 1919 MB Total available graphics memory
Primary hard disk 500GB Free (586GB Total)
Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium

System
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manufacturer Gateway
Model DX4200-09
Total amount of system memory 4.00 GB RAM
System type 64-bit operating system
Number of processor cores 4

Storage
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total size of hard disk(s) 586 GB
Disk partition (C:) 500 GB Free (586 GB Total)
Media drive (D:) CD/DVD

Graphics
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Display adapter type ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
Total available graphics memory 1919 MB
Dedicated graphics memory 256 MB
Dedicated system memory 0 MB
Shared system memory 1663 MB
Display adapter driver version 8.521.0.0
Primary monitor resolution 1440x900
DirectX version DirectX 10

One thing that does throw me off is that the spec sheets I find say the processor is 9100e, but in system properties it says 9150e?

I want to make this more into a gaming rig. I know I would have to upgrade the power supply first I was thinking along the lines of 500/550W. Then for graphics I don't know.

Comments/suggestions thanks!

EDIT: Games to be played, FPS and Racing.

(fresh member,1st reply),...

Goodday

Half year ago, i got addicted to new system -
CPU: intelcore2duo@3.17ghz
ram :2gig ddr3, meuh 32bits windows xp
1000gb HDD, rest not so important,...
I started with a geforce880gtx graphicscard, that seemed to be broke when my system arrived - then i was advised by Systembuilder to install AsusENGTX260, 896mb ram, *NEW* that time ....
Advise should be passed on,....take a look at the specs of this card and be advised that there is a newer one (dunno your budget), thought the ENGTX295, around 425euros.
The gtx295 has twice the amount of ram as the gtx260, which seems to be around your Available Graphics Memory (1919mb) : 1792mb.
Now u already have 2 cards in your attention....
My reason : running only 32bits winXP, only 2 gb ram. and 'down-clocked' to 1111mhz instead of 1333mhz, i still cannot find any stuttering of graphics, have no loadingscreens in most games, and no hardcore-frameratedrops in games like "Stalker-shoc","Stalker cs", - my shooters - or, "AssassinsCreed". in which i was expecting some 'grafic-stuttering'...
( I havent checked performance of "Tom Clacy's HawX" yet.. newer game)
Makes me think, i was good advised about this VGA-unit...
For that CPU-spec-difference, i dont know at the moment,......hmmmmbiosorsomething?
But, more advise : already buy BIG Powersupply !
For future upgrading,....SLi-config, Watercooling, Raid-HDsetup. or whatever.

I'm not positive about this, but I think the original Phenom's had a bug. I believe the 9150 is the revised 9100 with the flaw corrected.

As for video, you could slap an HD3870 in for about $100. It's not the absolute fastest, but pretty close for a small price. I'm running a 3850 & get good performance.

That would be right around my budget. I'm still waiting to pick up a newer game to see how it preforms on it. Too bad there's not a place that rents PC games (I know it wouldn't be possible)

lol @ the second part. Tried that, waited a couple days then felt stupid cuz I didn't pay attention to what platform it was for.

I forgot there was a such thing as computer demos lol. I'll download one right now.

Okay, I downloaded the CoD4 demo, since it's my favorite game. It was pretty disappointed with the performance. Graphics looked amazing, but I was getting bad FPS. I don't know how bad, but it was to the point to where I couldn't play. I fiddled with the in game settings a little bit but it didn't improve much. Would this be due to the graphics card or processor?

'Ello !

Don't let a demo fool u,....
My experience is that, in most demo-applications (for example Nero) u can edit, but cannot save . I am afraid in demo's u cannot max all out, coz it is a demo only.
Another example is Audio-editing-software - u can all, but after long and hard work u cant save or burn to CD....that sucks...
Is there not a friend / mate around who has newer games to check ?

actually, that really only pertains to some software and beta versions of games. the CoD4 Demo was a final build of the actual game.

yeah, that HD3200 is the integrated equivalent of the discrete HD3450 (other than a few things), which is not a hot performer. you'd have to set every setting to low with 1024x768 res to get any respectable fps out of it. the best thing to do would be to get a new GFX card. excellent options are the HD4830 and the 9800GT. for the most part, they're pretty even although the HD4830 is much cheaper. the only hitch is that they both require a 6pin PCI-E power connector. if your PSU doesn't have at least one then you'll have to get a new one. anything above 400watts from a respected brand will be fine.

GFX Cards - 2 Options
SAPPHIRE 100265HDMI Radeon HD 4830 - $89.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102822
Excellent performer for the price. however, if you don't plan on upgrading waiting for at least a month, pickup a HD4770. despite its name, its acutally faster than the HD4830 and will retail for the same price $100

ZOTAC ZT-98GES3P-FSR GeForce 9800 GT - $119.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500080
Can't go wrong with a 9800GT but the price is the main hindering factor

PSU - 3 Excellent choices
Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC 430W ATX12V - $40.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153023
almost unbeatable for the price. battle tested and approved.

Rosewill RP500-2 500W ATX12V v2.01 - $49.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182016
Large cooling fan, nice blue, proven performance.

Antec earthwatts EA500 500W Continuous Power ATX12V - $69.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371007
Its Antec and it has 2 6pin PCI-E connectors.

these are just some of the options you have out their that are begging you to spend your money on.

Phenom II 720 BE @ 3.41Ghz w/ Zerotherm Nirvana NV120
G.Skill 2 x 2GB DDR2 1066 @ 5-5-5-15
GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4
VisionTek HD 4850 512MB GDDR3
500GB Seagate 7200.12 - Windows 7 RC1
Hiper Type-R 580 WATT PSU

Thanks. I'll bookmark this post and come back to it after I pay off some of the other things I bought.
