I would make it dynamic just like the dates/times that are top of each post.

For example, create a "[date]" tag:



Which would be converted to the local users' timezone, either server- or client-side. You could use UTC as the base-time instead of UNIX time, that's just an example. I only suggest UNIX time because that's easier for a script to parse.

A "[userID]" tag would be nice too:

Replace [userID:52972] with "McFly" (or whatever my current nick is, since it's easy to change here at HWA).

So quote boxes could look like:

My latest work is an "Online Users" list to replace the RSS box (it doesn't have to replace the RSS box, but since I never use it, I figured that's where I would put it).

It uses GM_xmlhttpRequest (Greasemonkey version of XMLHttpRequest) to fetch the page where online users are listed, and then grab the usernames.

Because the usernames don't show up until the background page loads (which happens a second or two after the main page loads), and since loading two pages everytime isn't ideal on bandwidth, this would work better server-side. But it's fun.

I changed it to just keep the rollover effect, so you don't have to see them popping in when they arrive. They're only shown when you mouseover the "Users Online" link:
