Hi,i think my power supply is dead but i can't be 100% sure of it so here is what happened.I wake up in the morning and turn pc on (i suppose everything was pretty cool).I start playing a game called assassins creed and my pc suddenly dies and it won't turn on.....i tried to unplug and plug in that main wire which enters directly into the power supply and it made wierd sounds which i think was electricity.Noting turns on at all.my power supply unit is MPT-460XP

motherboard:msi k9n neo v3
cpu:AMD Athlon 64 X2
graphic card: Radeon HD 3870 512M

So i can replace my power supply but i want to make sure that its the source of the problem. Is there anyway to check out my power supply?

any help would be appreciated and sorry for my bad english.

You need a PSU tester.Or borrow a psu from another PC and try that one in your system. If the system runs with the borrowed psu its your psu.

But seriously it sounds like your PSU anyway. You can get a decent PSU from OCZ /Corsair/ even Rosewill for around $70.

Ive used Rosewill in a few builds for family and friends and i havent had a single issue so far.You might wanna give this one a look Its got active PFC , sleeved cables and plenty of power so you can upgrade later without worring about if your psu is powerful enough

Here are a few you might wanna check out if you not really worried about upgradng later and 500 watts should be more than enough for your system the way it is now

Just a caveat. Don't get a cheapo bargain replacement PSU. The PSU is NOT the place to scrimp. Get a well reviewed PSU that you have determined exceeds the power requirements of your computer on all the power rails. I recommend a power margin of at least 20%.

You can get a basic PSU tester for about US$20 at newegg.com, tigerdirect.com, geeks.com, etc. These basic testers will not tell you about everything that can go wrong with a PSU...they only check a bare minimum of parameters, and they provide only a go/no-go status while the PSU is not under any stress-load. But, they are a good (and easy) first test to check for major PSU failure.

If your PSU does not have a sticker that details its specifications, you can get detailed info (including things like who really makes it and where they are located) about your MPT-460XP PSU, check out
http://database.ul.com/cgi-bin/XYV/template/LISEXT/1FRAME/show...sequence=1

You may find out that your PSU doesn't provide enough power for your current system configuration, and you will have to take that into consideration in your replacement purchase.

There's a lot of great info at the HWA forum on PSUs at
