What a joke - of course, you could pretty well see this one coming given the history of the HDMI standard(s).

Good to have a standard with five different standards. Wait what?

So are you telling me that future devices supporting HDMI 1.4 will not be backwards compatible with HDMI 1.3? If so, that would be very disappointing.

I just spent a $1000 on an upgrade.
I ended up with a EVGA GTX285 AND a EVGA9800GTX in my system, as of now an i7 system with a RAID5 and 12GB of DDR3x1600Memory.
Oops. My two screens are too old to meet the HDMI standard.
A 20" Viewsonic Professional series, and a 22" Viewsonic Multimedia Series, but neither qualify.
This s**tte sucks.

a few weeks ago, I went out to get a DVI to HDMI cable to replace my DVI to HDMI converter connector and HDMI cable (to eliminate a break in connection), I wanted a single run from card to monitor AND I was amazed at the price range. For a 3 meter length.... it was as high as 80.00 bucks... geezzzzz.... Luckly, I found a nice thick cable with gold ends for 15.00 bucks. From what I have heard, with digital signals as with HDMI and DVI output..... the elaborate high dollar cables are a waste of your money because the digital signals that passes through the wires are not exceptable to noise as like if it was vga signals or like analog outputs in audio signals i.e. speakers, patch cords, etc..... where better built cables are more needed.

When I setup my parents home theater a few years ago, I ordered a bunch of $6 7-foot HDMI cables on Newegg, they all work great and have no problem pushing 1080p video and 5.1 audio.

I think due to bandwidth, you might need HDMI 1.3+ for full Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA, but I could be mistaken. Compressed Dolby or DTS 5.1 though is of course no problem.

A couple of years ago, after we bought our 42" LCD, I went in to get an HDMI cable for our DVR, which runs at 1080i with 5.1. I had two choices in 6-footers: an $8, generic-branded cable, or an $89 gold-plated, diamond-studded Monster Cable. The sales associate told me that unless I spring for the Monster Cable, my picture quality would be subpar and the audio would be unlistenable. I proceeded to strangle him with the generic cable, hid his body in a supply closet, paid for the cable and have been enjoying our TV with it ever since.

I've been something of an audiophile since the '70s, and the only time I've ever seen any difference in sound for the Monster cables has been for very high wattage implementations such as 1KW+/channel.
Low oxygen copper and gold ends do provide for a cleaner singnal even in moderate wattage implementations, but these cables can be had for half the cost of the monster branded cables. I've never seen or heard any difference between a good cable and a "great" cable though.

That's because you didn't have your stereo system on a super-low vibration slab of granite. The "great" signal was vibrating out the cables before it got to the speakers. Duh. :P

Really?!? DOH!
Vibration???? Where did this come in?
Sorry, but you are wrong!
Now, if we want to talk about turntables, then there is that, but really?
I was talking about cables. WTF are you talking about?
