Well, I thought the requirements were a helluva lot higher! I've got a 6600gt as well btw and I'm running it perfectly with no slowdown since I updated media player classic: home cinema mod. This is only in regards to a few trailers... and other downloaded content. Maybe if I had a blu ray player it would be slower read from the disc..

Still I'm rather happy, vlc couldn't cope well with it at all.

the issue with running 1080p on a pc isn't so much the HD content itself, its more or less the DRM decryption you're pc has to process as well.

Cool, I'll have to tell my brother to try Media Player classic cause at the moment his overclocked 2.4Ghz 3000+ struggles playing 1080p video in VLC (720p videos run fine).

I think new drivers let your video card handle some of the load of the video instead of just letting the CPU take it hard.

Yeah, only problem is he has a X1800XT 512MB which is now "legacy" according to AMD/ATI and the latest driver supported for it is 9.3. Funny thing is, this "legacy" videocard still plays nearly all the latest games at near max settings.

The performance will mainly depend on the codec used. While you will be able to run MPEG2 1080p content just fine, with those CPUs, you can forget about AVC/H.264 , the standard used for blu-rays. DivX/Xvid might as well be problematic at these resolutions.

Also, in order to decode standard blu-ray discs, you will need any graphics card with HDCP output capacity, which more or less started with the GF7600 GTS. I don't know the series for ATI/AMD.

well i didnt know how to check the codec on media player classic. but gspot and vlc recognised it as avc/h2.64! 1920x1080! I feel like i'm cheating, I won't have to upgrade my comp till diablo 3 comes out now :)

This was with the home cinema version btw, dunno if plain classic wil handle it.

Oh ok didn't see that bit, as I'm clearly not a pirate, I guess I will need a slight upgrade for the discs. I kid not on the results though, vlc was screwy, but the cpu never hit 100% acording to task manager. Classic had it always at 100%, but with absolutely no slowdown in the application which I find quite bizzare as I'm used to my pc being vey sluggish at anything when its maxed out. Also I've never overcloked in my life.

Seems to be the best thread in which to ask...

Apparently not best place to post my question. Moved to
