My tv is connected to my digital reciever via optical cable. Recently the sound has been going out randomly. In order to fix it I have to unplug the optical cable and replug it back in. Anyone know what could be doin this?

Does sound like a cable problem. You don't have a spare optical cable to test it out? Cuz then you can isolate the problem.

Nope. It's weird though it works immediately after I replug it in, and the sound seems to go out when the sound source changes. Example: My cable box is connected to my tv via Component cables, and certain channels (depending on the show/movie) support different types of sound. When ever a channel comes on that supports Dolby digital, I'd have to replug it in (and vice versa if I were to switch from the channel to another that supports 2 channel audio). Another example is my XBOX360 (connected via HDMI). I was watching a DVD last night (Aqua Teen Hunger Force) and each time the movie started a new episode or when I return to the menu (either manually or when the episode is finished) the sound goes out!

Ahh its driving me crazy. I guess I'll have to grab another optical cable.

That makes it sound like it's not the cable to me. If the cable were physically damaged, it wouldn't care what kind of signal was passing through it (or that you changed formats).

You should be able to pick up a cheap cable just to test it, though.

It seems to be working after I erased the reciever's memory and cleaned the tips of the optical cord with a t-shirt. We'll see. Thanks again.

Well the connection screwed up again, so I had to do some rewiring. Now my cable box connects to my reciever via optical cable and my TV is connected to my reciever via red/white audio cable.

It sucks. For some reason my tv wont put optical audio out anymore...? :(
