Hello people; i am new to this forum and i am looking for a new motherboard:
I do not know very much about the market but i do know computer science, so here are some of my specifications:

* Must support 64 bit processors
* Must support multiple (either 2 or 4) processor cores.
* Should have 8GB of RAM capacity (if this is unrealistic, then i would have 4GB)
* Should be able to support Windows 7
* Should have good graphics integration (something like AMD CrossFire)

They are listed in order of importance. I would like to stick with AMD, as i have had it all of my life. Can anyone give me any suggestions as to the company, model and budget i should go with.

Thanks in advance for your advice,
mintsmike:)

One of the best AMD boards around

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131361

TBH mate just because you have AMD all your life is not a VALID reason for sticking with them, especially as you will get better performance for same money from the Intel range, fanboys dont like hearing this but its true. Only the very latest AMD chips are good but still lagging behind.

Thanks for the advice. If you can suggest the same power on an alternative brand name, then please tell me. Im all for going with intel.

Thanks again,

If you have money and don't mind spending it Core i7 processors.....

Price/Performance.....Q6600 G0 and an Asus P5Q and overclock it like a mad man.....a popular choice I dare say. The P5Q fills most if not all of the requirements

I agree with all this except the i7 Core platfrom...stay well clear. You can match the performance for a fration of the money. And I would be hesitant to get a 6600 at this stage of the game unless it was for good good money. As the Q9xxx series are better cooler chips and not that more exspensive.

No reason to steer well clear of i7 if its a complete rebuild from the ground up.It's not a smart move if your just building a single video card gaming PC .But if you want the most performance and you plan on SLI or CF then i7 is the way to go and is gonna net you the most bang for the buck. But if you can wait til Dec or Jan then i5 should be out and is a litle better for mainstream PC

.Rumor has it intel is phasing out 1366 platforms but it just a rumor as of now

well if you go SLI or CF the i7 at stock (or with a mild OC say to 3.0ghz)will beat the CD2 at 4.0ghz and remember i7 920 is under $200 in a lot of stores now and the mobo's are getting cheaper to.And come on were gamer and overclockers we want top performance period

I will admitt that nvidia recommends getting better Graphics over a better cpu.But if you have the best of both worlds so be it

Now running a ASUS RAMPAGE II Extreme MB with an Intel I7 920 Processor.
Am happy with it, even at stock speeds after moving from a 2 core AMD 4400+, I now have 8 threads running. It really rocks when I kick it up to 3GHz, which is the stable overclock I got on my AMD 4400+ with 2 cores, just doing it now with 4 cores with the same PSU.
Others are doing 4GHz, but I've not been able to stablize at those speeds.

I can run 4.4ghz but temps are just to high.So i keep it at 2.66/2.8 with turbo and 3.8ghz.Depending on my mood..lol

Mothow what do you consider high temps? Cause If I were to follow the advice of some people then I would have to underclock my cpu so I won't melt it lol, considering how hot the climate is over here hehe.

In fact I'm think it's time to try the new 780i and see if this Q6600 G0 will withstand 70c-ish temps.

Hi again guys, i had a look at some of the things you reccommended and my mouth gasped. When i said i didnt mind spending money, i didnt mean that i was willing to pay that much.

I did some digging of my own to find this processor: (DP45SG): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Desktop-Board-DP45SG-Motherboard...mp;sr=8-1.

Please comment on its performance with the Intel Core 2 Quad. (They both seem to have excellent performance and are also within my price range:

I would like to know if

* It works well in 64-bit technology
* It works with my AMD Athlon 64 3000+ currently (I will be purchasing the Core 2 Quad and the motherboard at different times (mobo first) so i would like to know if i can still use my pc inbetween times)
* On the website, the clock speed is marked as 2.33 GHz, is that an overall speeed or does each core process at that speed.

Thanks again and in advance,
mintsmike

LMAO....

Yeah we were pushing the boat out a bit. But I still say stick with my original comments. As for the board you picked out I would get the P5Q deluxe/premium over it anyday....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-P5Q-Deluxe-Motherboard-Definition...mp;sr=1-45

Or a 2nd choice.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-P5Q-Pro-P45-Sockel/dp/B0019RBM5K/...mp;sr=1-39

Then fit whatever CPU you can afford I recommend the E8600 if gaming or Q9650 or at a push Q6000.

Might I suggest one of these two websites to purchase from since your in the UK. I highly recommend both of them.....I might be the only one, but I've never had good experiences with Amazon.
http://www.tekheads.co.uk
http://www.ebuyer.com/

And I'm still recommending the Q6600 and the P5Q Pro :P with a little tinkering i'm willing to bet you can get 3Ghz from it with out too much trouble.

In regards to using it with your Athlon, you need to look at the socket type's. Intel Core 2 is socket 775, but I'm willing to stab that your Athlon is socket 939 so they wont physically fit/work together. So the answer is a no you cant use the old processor and the new board together as they are not compatible....new and old tech.

This may mean you having to wait so you can buy both at the same time, even though the point is moot you could still use a PC with old hardware and new mixed together but it would mean reinstalling the operating system in most cases as you can't just swap the motherboard and expect the OS to play nice.

Most boards/processors these days are 64bit compatible if not all so that's not an issue, and clock speed is across all 4 cores...ie Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz is 4 cores all running at 2.4Ghz.

So, if i were to run two tasks (threads) at the same time on different cores each thread would be processed at 2GHz,

Thanks

Yes the two threads would both execute on different cores each running at 2ghz+

For example a video editing program that supports multiple threads would split its workload into two threads executing on two cores (one thread each) and in an ideal world performing twice as fast as a single core/thread.

EDIT: It also might be worth asking what do you use your PC for? ie Gaming, Video Encoding, Rendering, office work ect

Ooooh! You can take this opportunity to give her those Sli Gtx260 and buy yourself a pair of 285 like you always wanted :_) Come on you know you want to!

Or change your case to the CoolerMaster Scout which imo looks a whole lot cleaner.

Yeah i want to but i cant plus her mobo is only CF ready. My friend that im trading says the E8200 does 3.6ghz at stock voltages and thats all she will need.Plus about 6 bright green/blue or red LED 120x25mm fans. Also the Scout is to small for my needs
