heya guys, hows ure summer been? :)

as some of u know i have a EP35 gigabyte board with a cold boot issue which really sucks..

a friend is selling his Asus P5Q pro, still in the box unopened and selling it for like 45 euros.. still has receipt for it, 2 weeks old.. was wondering if it would be worth getting? im only aiming at a 3,2ghz OC for my quad for the moment before i move on to a Core i5 rig..

any thoughts regarding this?

Capt,

Go for it... 45 Euro is a very good price. At least you will rid of the cold boot issue.

so which P5Q are you talking about... In your topic heading you meantioned P5Q SE but in your post you mentioned P5Q Pro ???

Asus P5Q Pro goes for 119.00USD...
Asus P5Q SE goes for 105.00USD...

45.00 Euro = 63.00USD

Either way.... the price is good and if at a later date... you can do a quick upgrade to the 45nm cpu (Q9450,9550,9650...) if you are so inclined....

Also isnt there a fix for the cold boot.I remember my Abit IP35 had cold boot issues but Abit fixed it with a bios update.Hasnt Gigabyte done the same thing for their P35 boards

My old P5K was the best board I ever had, Its a shame its showing its age a little but the P35 chipset punched well above its weight IMHO. So I am expecting great things from my P45 Maximus when I get it today!!!!!

They all run hot P35 /P45/X38/X48/X58 chipsets. But if you have good airflow in your case i wouldnt worry about it to much.

The P45 chipset on my GA-EP45-UD3R runs very cool, barely luke warm..... heck, even my Corsair Dominator runs barely luke warm as well...... BUT I cant say that for my brother's P45 GA-EP45-DS3L where the chipset heatsink runs extremely hot and his Kingston 1066 4GB mem runs hot too.... But he swapped out his Kingston for OCZ Reapers and now his memory runs very cool. Go figure... But his chipset still runs hot.

Hopefully the P45 chipset on the Asus board will run cool for you... (fingers crossed)

I have the P5Q which is a step down from the SE. Works OK for me at 4GB's with the E8400 I think im losing a bit of performance compared to better boards, but it works for me. Except for these damn 0x0124 BSOD's I get with Win7 once or twice a week. Not sure what the problem is as the .dmp files can't seem to agree on a single hardware element.

I dont think you are losing much performance at all with the P5Q chipset.....Hippy. Hell when I was doing my "research" for getting my Asus Maximus Formula 2 the P5Q deluxe was right up there. All you are missing is a few bells and whistles its the same performance more or less.

>> Re: Asus P5Q SE worth getting?
Actually plug I'm not quite sure it's that way. The P5Q series use different pcbs, although most of the features are the same except for subtle differences. The P5QSE uses a 12"x7.6" board. The P5Q uses a 12"x8.8" board and the P5Q Pro Turbo uses a 12"x9.6" board. The SE has no IEEE1394a connectors but like the P5Q uses Realteks Azalia sound. The Pro Turbo uses VIA's sound, etc etc. So you really can't just see it's a P5Q series board and expect it to be the same except for bells and whistles. You really do need to get into the spec sheets and make sure that's what you want. Actually having not looked at the SE specs before I can see major differences in overclocking ability.

P5Q
- vDIMM: 64-step DRAM voltage control
- vChipset :55-step Chipset voltage control
- vCPU PLL: 64-step CPU PLL voltage control

P5QSE
- vDIMM: 5-step DRAM voltage control

If you are doing serious OCing, that right there is more than bells and whistles, although I have to say my board won't boot any higher than 2.2v on DRAM voltages even though it goes to 3 and my memory is rated from 2.1-2.4v which bottlenecks my memory at 1116MHz as the highest stable speed I can get. I had the same issue with the MSI P45 Platinum that uses the same BIOS. which leaves me not knowing if it's the BIOS or the chipset or the memory (GEIL Black Dragon).

EDIT: And after writing this I just noticed he was getting a P5Q Pro not the SE. That's what I get for posting something within 20 minutes of waking up.
(insert Homer Simpson voice here--->)DOH!

EDIT 2: Oh it is the SE board! Double DOH!
