Hello. My computer has been infected. I have a Dell (older model bought in 06). It has been running slow and taking about 5 minutes to start up and about the same amount of time for the internet to start. About two days ago a desktop screen (the background) popped up and I could still see my icons but the screen said I was infected by a virus. I got a virus software and tried to run it but the .exe files were not allowed to run. There was a pop up on the bottom right that said the file is corrupted and could not run. I dont think it was the virus software but the actually virus that is blocking any executables from working. A little while later, the monitor quit coming on. I have tried plugging in other monitors but nothing happens. Is my computer a total loss?

Viruses can cause your computer to run slow and block out a lot of stuff, but damaging hardware is a whole different story. It's possible that you may have a combination of bad hardware and a virus. I've had several cases where a virus makes errors on the hard drive surface. In other words, there were problems with the hard drive to begin with, and when a scan was executed, this failed or took a long time which made me think there were some bad sectors on the drive, and that ended up being the case.

Your 1st step would be to at least get your PC up and running. When you power it on, before you get to Windows, do you see at least the BIOS screen come up?

Sounds to me like you have the ViRUT Virus. It renders all .exe files useless.
If it is, this virus, then click on this link: http://www.avg.com/virus-removal.ndi-67762
and run the the program.

Let us all know how you get on

It's a bit complicated - if you do have the Virut file - since you can't see desktop, etc.
So what to do, is that software on disk. get task manager up, and click on FILE, then
run command from there. Locate your disk from there ie c:drive... then run the file
from there. It's not an executable, so it works. It will reboot once done.

let me first say how much i appreciate you helping me with this. i have been extremely stressed about losing my pictures. if it wasnt for those i would have just called the computer a loss and got a new one.

after running the previous software from the bios menu i can get to windows but when i get to the windows xp login screen it asks for a password to log in. As soon as I login, it gets into my windows screen then immediately logs me back out. I tried entering through Safe Mode, but it automatically shuts down the computer. Any ideas on how I can get into Windows? I don't think that I can run your recommended software since I cannot even get my Task Manager running.

on a side note, how can i add my ipod pictures to another computer?
