>> Re: Outrageous temperature readings......processor or motherboard faulty?
Ok everybody, here is the follow-up for my problem.....

Got my 3,0 Prescott today, installed it and the result......in bios where the fan runs at maximum and the 3,4 reached 85 in a minute or so this 3,0 reached 43 degrees.

As soon as it boots past the bios the fan goes down to a idle speed at 1600 rpm and goes completly silent. Have used the computer for many hours today without getting it to even increase the fan speed.

Since it is a Packard Bell computer the bios is as lousy as it can get so there arenīt really any options for the fan speed to adjust. Just 2 options, to let the bios adjust the speed or let it run at full speed all the time (which will make me ears fall off or so..!)

One more option, and that is to set an alarm tempretaure for the cpu, and that can be set between 60 - 90 degrees celsius. This kind of sets the frames for when a Prescott is considered to be "hot". I tried it at the lowest setting and played WoW for an hour or so but the cpu never reached 60.

Too bad that Intel thermal analysis didnīt work with Prescotts, that is a great tool to both put load on the core and read the temperature. Anyone know any other program that can do that?

So, the conclusion has to be that the old 3,4 core is basically ready for the trashbin. Or, maybe i remove the heatspreader/cover on it and give it a try with the cooler directly at the core just for fun. Theoretically it could be the contact between the core and the heatspreader that is bad.

Glad to hear that you got your situation back under control and normal. Gosh.... a real hardware problem and not some famous "stigmatism".

The 43C idle temp that you got for your replacement 3.0 cpu sound correct using the stock generic cooler. The 3.4 cpu would be very similiar if it were not broken. As for getting hot.... when you reach 60C or above, then is when it is considered getting hot... if you hit 70C, then the cpu would start throttling down to protect itself.... and much further above would cause it to shutdown locking up the system. Now if you have a better cooler like say a Zalman 9500 or similiar, you would get much lower temps.

Try running Prime 95 to load your cpu and then monitor what temps you are reaching

Those things have to reach around 130c at the core before the TCC shuts it down.
