Basically, a 17" Monitor has a max resolution of say 1024x768.
But the computer was previously connected to a 21" monitor set to 16x12.
When connected to the 17", it will display a black screen due to the fact
the computer is set to 1600x1200. No other monitor available at moment,
and no visible desktop, so how to I go about forcing the resolution to the
original 1024x768? Remember, no other monitor available as yet...

As far as I'm aware, it's not possible to force from safe mode since the
GPU is not used. Only onboard graphics. Besides, what ever res I chose
from safemode, will make no difference from boot.

Thanks

Tam...

Two options that spring to mind:

1) VGA Mode:

You might have to hit F8 twice to get that option, but it will take you into a normal Windows boot (not safe mode), with a generic VGA driver loaded at (probably) 640x480. From there, set your correct res.

OR ...

2) Boot into safe mode, disable video driver, reboot into normal mode, re-enable driver and set resolution.

I always had an idea that was what VGA mode did. "Thx for confirming that Mcfly!

Glad I could help. :D

I couldn't find a screenshot of that bootmenu that I liked, so I even fired up my XP VM to take that, just for you Tam. <3
