I was downloading some stuff the other day and avast popped up. I went through the steps and everything seemed okay until today when i opened windows media center and tried to watch a movie and they weren't there. Long story short, my computer won't recognize .wmv files anymore but I can still play them in media player. I know it's probably a registry problem, but software is not my strong point so if you guys can help me it would greatly be appreciated.

I'm assuming you mean "wont recognise" as you double click and it doesn't open it automatically with WMP?

Try re setting up the associations with WMP...ie right click on a WMV file>Open With>Choose default program Then select WMP and be sure that ""always use the selected program...." is ticked.... see if that gives you any joy.

Good Luck

I had already tried that before I posted and I didn't work. Any other ideas.
