It's basically black, sports sunglasses with special LCD lenses that allow you to see, on certain, specially-made screens, in 3D.

Acer and Asustek are first up with "3D Vision Ready", high-profile notebooks in Q4 of 2009.

Next up are TVs, with Sony, Hyundai, Samsung, Panasonic, Philips, and LG with their new LCD TVs that were shown at IFA in early 2009. Sony will release a 3D Vision Ready LCD TV in Q1 of 2010.

And along with all of that, there will be numerous games that will be released on PS3's and other game consoles in Blu-Ray disks.

But... what's the point of all this?

I mean, it's good moving forward on home technology but who's going to watch a 3D movie on a laptop?

I'd rather watch an awesome movie on an awesome HD channel on a huge LCD TV without 3D. The movie would be way more intense compared to watching it on a 17" laptop with 3D vision enabled.

I see the point of having 3D Vision on LCD TVs though, because then you can watch 3D movies at home. But then again, it doesn't look like the movie industry is planning any 3D movies you can watch at home anytime soon(other than that movie... "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs")

Games, I also see the point. It'd bring out some realism, but it's going to take a while until there are enough titles on the market to be able to fully say that having 3D Vision Ready displays are worth the money.

And the displays are probably going to be expensive too.

What do you guys think? I think the glasses are pretty pointless at this point... or later too...

Sky Broadcasting over here in UK are about to start 3DTV and some major companies
such as Toshiba, JVC et all are involved with this too. I've tried watching 3D on television,
but i'd prefer a screen the size of a whole room to watch 3D (conventional 3D Glasses
cyan/red). But those new TV's, etc I think will be amazing.

Oh wow I'm behind. I definitely did not know that broadcasting companies are starting to plan for 3D arrival. Thanks for the info.

Yea, and seeing as large LCD TVs are as expensive as they are now, they'll probably be even more expensive for the new 3D TVs.

From seeing 3-D movies and shows and such, just a speculation. I agree with you about having a 3D TV of a whole wall. It was weird enough watching a 3D show w/ a screen that didn't cover my whole vision. If you look away, the 3D is somewhat gone.

I also believe they'll be amazing, but I think it's too early to tell how amazing they will be too. We'll just have to wait.

Give me 3D in a cinema any day. It's amazing! It's like you can touch it. Watching 3D
on todays tv's tho, just a waste of time i think. But the forthcoming 3DTV's will be sweet!

Check these links:

Gonna be pretty cool!

Yea I agree, 3D in cinema is absolutely beautiful. Makes the movie that much better. And if the movie is graphics intensive... oh the possibilities and the potential.

Wow I've got to say, that 3DTV looks SICK. I'm excited to see how they will do once they become more mainstream. And then maybe they will become cheaper so that bourgeois like me can enjoy the epicness of 3D at home? Xp

Hehe! Hopefully it'll be mainstream. 3D's back in a big way, and it's in more demand.
On the subject, I've never been to an IMAX complex yet. The closest one we have here
in Scotland is in Glasgow, and that's a 2hr drive away. Was supposed to go to the IMAX
in Dallas when I was there last November but never got round to it. It's one place i'd love
to watch a movie!

Yes, it's much, much more in demand. Pixar is coming out with more 3D movies later this year(I think the closest one is "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs", which I think looks great)

Oh wow you're missing out! I live on West Coast of the USA, and I have an IMAX theater a 15 min drive away. I watched Transformers 2 in IMAX and... as bad as the movie was... the sound and the quality of the graphics was absolutely amazing. I can literally hear every single thump each robot made, and when there're explosions(there were plenty of those in Transformers 2...), it felt like I was literally there for the explosion. Absolutely amazing. But next time you come to the US, you should definitely watch an IMAX movie, preferrably a much better one than Transformers 2 Xp it's just amazing!

On the topic of 3D, I think that video games may actually beat movies to have the first large impact on the consumer industry. Since there're new titles coming out practically every month or so, and movies aren't made and released as quickly as game titles, I think games will have the first big hit.

What do you think?
